Arrieta's night is over, Adams gets 1st hit (updated)

Jake Arrieta turned in his second-shortest outing tonight, leaving after 3 2/3 innings and being charged with six runs. The last run scored when Jason Berken hit Jayson Werth with the bases loaded. Arrieta allowed six hits, walked three, struck out three and hit a batter. He threw 91 pitches, 56 for strikes. PItch counts have been an issue with Arrieta, but he took it to the extreme tonight. That 37-pitch second inning set quite a tone. Arrieta allowed eight runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings against the Texas Rangers in his second start of the season. He gave up three runs or fewer in his other eight starts before tonight. On a more positive note, Ryan Adams hit a soft liner into left field in the bottom of the fourth that fell in front of Laynce Nix for his first major league hit. Instant update: This game is just plain weird. The Oriole scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to reduce Washington's lead to 6-5. Felix Pie doubled to center field to score Mark Reynolds, but he kept going to third while Adams stood on the bag. Pie got caught in a rundown, juked a defender - I mean, infielder - and dived into third. Adams was still standing on the bag. This isn't a newsflash, just a reminder that Pie lacks certain instincts. Third base coach John Russell held Adams late, but Pie still can't assume that the rookie will attempt to score from first base with no outs. Pie had his head down and kept going. He also had no reason to dive into the bag, but that much is obvious. Adams came home on Adam Jones' sacrifice fly, but the Orioles were stuck with two outs instead of one.
