Arrieta's struggles continue as Phillies top Orioles

For struggling Orioles starter Jake Arrieta, it went from bad to worse tonight, as he got an early exit against the Philadelphia Phillies in a 9-6 loss to start the weekend series at Camden Yards. It is almost hard to remember that Arrieta looked so great on opening day in Baltimore, pitching seven shutout innings against Minnesota, or that he had an ERA of 2.66 over his first three starts. Tonight, he got the first two hitters out before three straight Philly singles made it a 1-0 game. Then Philly hammered Arrieta for six runs on six hits in the second to take a 7-0 lead. Shane Victorino, who matched his career high with five RBIs, hit a two-run homer in the fourth off Arrieta as Philadelphia moved ahead 9-3 at that point. On the night, Arrieta gave up 11 hits and nine runs (all earned) in four innings, with no walks and five strikeouts. He falls to 2-8 with an ERA of 6.32. A career-high nine runs were allowed by the right-hander tonight, topping the eight he gave up on April 9 last year against Texas. The last time an O's starter gave up nine runs was June 6, 2009 and it was Jason Berken against Oakland. Some updated numbers on Arrieta: * He has an ERA now of 11.09 over his last four starts. * He is 0-6 with an ERA of 9.34 over his past seven starts. * He has allowed four runs or more in 10 of 13 starts in 2012. The Orioles tried to rally with three in the second, one in the fourth and two in the seventh on J.J. Hardy's 11th homer. Chris Davis had a solo homer and RBI single. Robert Andino had a two-run double after knocking in just one run over his previous 15 games. With the loss, the Orioles fall to 32-26. They have now lost 12 of 17 games since they moved to a season-high 13 games over .500 on May 19. The Phillies ended a six-game losing streak, improving to 29-31. They are now 22-24 all-time against the Orioles.
