Orioles manager Buck Showalter named Jake Arrieta as Monday night's starter in Detroit.
Jason Hammel is being pushed back at least one day while he recovers from a stomach virus that swept through his family's home.
If Hammel is unable to start Tuesday, the Orioles could recall left-hander Zach Britton from Triple-A Norfolk and option Arrieta. Rule 5 pick T.J. McFarland also would be an option if he isn't used in relief during the series opener against the Tigers.
Arrieta was optioned to Norfolk for the first time after going 1-1 with a 6.63 ERA in four starts, with 14 runs, 15 hits, 16 walks and 20 strikeouts in 19 innings. He's 3-3 with a 5.50 ERA in seven games (six starts) with the Tides.
In his last two starts with Norfolk, Arrieta allowed 15 runs and 19 hits in 10 1/3 innings.
Arrieta has posted a 1.46 ERA in two career starts against the Tigers, with two runs allowed in 12 1/3 innings. In his only start in Detroit, he permitted one run in 6 1/3 innings.
