Baker on Lind, Kelley and Montero

Second-round selection right-hander Wil Crowe has signed with the Nationals, a source with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed.

Crowe pitched for the University of South Carolina and has been drafted three times, the previous two by the Indians. He has fully recovered from Tommy John surgery he underwent in 2015.

The 22-year-old Crowe toured Nats Park and met Nats players prior to Wednesday's game against the Cubs. He was 6-5 with a 3.41 ERA in 92 1/3 innings last season with the Gamecocks.

* Double-A Harrisburg infielder/outfielder Jose Marmolejos, right-hander John Simms and catcher Raudy Read have been named to the Eastern League Western Division All-Star team. The Eastern League All-Star game is July 12 in Manchester, N.H.

* Right-hander Shawn Kelley is out with a right trapezius strain. He has been on the disabled list since June 17. He has been seen going through many of the normal pregame routines with his fellow pitchers.

Manager Dusty Baker was asked if Kelley has had any setbacks.

"Not that they know of," Baker said. "He threw two days ago. We got a lot of guys on the mend. I'm hoping that before too long we can be back whole. Meantime, we have to do what we have to do to win ball games."

* Cubs catcher Miguel Montero was critical of his starting pitcher Jake Arrieta last night after they allowed the Nats to steal seven bases. Montero blamed Arrieta's slow delivery to the plate, saying it didn't allow him enough time to throw out Trea Turner and the rest of the Nats speed crew.

Baker said the Montero outburst was a product of losing a game and letting his emotions get the best of him in the locker room.

"Yeah, that's going to happen, especially if there's not much cool-down period in between. That's why I'm supposed to have 15-minute cool-down period before I come see you guys. You're supposed to have that cool-down period because you end up probably saying how you feel, but you really shouldn't say it.

"I've had it happen. You try to hope that these things stay in house, but sometimes they get out there. You just try not to let it fester on your team. Shouldn't say it."

Baker's reaction when told the news that Montero had been designated for assignment today:

"You see? That's what happens sometimes," Baker said. "Wow."

* First baseman Adam Lind has been an incredible find for the Nats in 2017. Lind is hitting .324 with six homers in 27 RBIs. In late and close games, Lind is hitting .364 with three homers and five RBIs in 25 plate appearances. Baker went back to the manager who worked with Lind from 2006 through 2014 in Canada for advice on the lefty hitter when the Nats were considering signing him in the offseason.

"I can't believe Adam Lind was hitting .220 last year," Baker said. "Because (Former Toronto manager) Cito Gaston had told me about him years ago up in Toronto. I talked to his mother afterwards, and his mother said 'talk to Adam like Cito used to talk to him.' Cito had told me about Adam, and we had a chance to get him. I called Cito. Cito told me what his strengths and weaknesses were. He's been an invaluable guy on this team."

Gaston managed the Blue Jays from 1989 through 1997 and 2008-2010. Toronto won back-to-back world championships in 1992 and 1993.
