With all the inclement weather and postponed games this week, plus rain again Saturday morning, Nationals manager Davey Martinez joked he got to Nats Park by kayak this morning.
"I'm ready, woke up at 8 o'clock this morning," Martinez said. "I'm fired up. Hopefully we get a game in. Hopefully, two. We are ready to play. The mini-All Star game is good enough."
Martinez opted to give Tanner Roark the day game start and sees a silver lining in all these days off.
"It was kind of Roark's day really so we let him get the first game," Martinez said. "He threw an extra side in between. He feels good. I kind of like the fact that he was given a little break. If you look back he's had some significant pitch count numbers the first few games so in order to give him a couple of extra days was good."
Roark has thrown 103 or more pitches in his last five starts, including 222 combined pitches in his last two games.
The Skipper said it's actually good to give the entire starting rotation some rest this week.
"They've been out there, they've been throwing over 100 pitches in an outing, which of course they are built to do," Martinez said. "But it's nice to give them a little blow."
Martinez confirmed that infielder Adrian Sanchez will be available as the 26th man for game two tonight instead of a pitcher because the bullpen has had so much time off.
"We had such a long break," Martinez said. "I don't think we need a pitcher, maybe an extra bat. Extra infielder will be nice."
Catcher Matt Wieters had not arrived yet at the clubhouse for an update on his hamstring surgery recovery, but Martinez said he would talk to him when he arrives.
The pregame news conference revealed some unfortunate injury news regarding outfielder Rafael Bautista, who severely injured his left knee in an outfield collision last night during a Triple-A Syracuse game and is done for the season.
"He was injured. He was injured really bad. Hurt his left knee. He's having surgery on Wednesday. We want to wish him well. He's going to be out for the rest of the year."
Martinez said the loss of Bautista certainly affects the club's outfield depth, which is also missing Brian Goodwin and Adam Eaton.
"It kind of stings. It's getting to the point now where enough is enough," Martinez said. "I hope he has a speedy recovery. Right now we are looking forward to seeing him in spring training."
Martinez did have some good news on the recovery of Goodwin who has been out since April 16 with a left wrist contusion.
"He's starting to swing the bat. It's been a slow process but he's getting better. Right now we are moving forward. Hopefully now he turns that corner. And we can get moving."
