Baysox battling for playoff berth

The Bowie Baysox will play their final regular season home game tonight, hosting Altoona at 7:05 p.m. The Baysox are 73-64 and trail Harrisburg by a half game for second place in the Eastern League's Western Division. The top two teams make the playoffs, so the Baysox are looking to catch and pass Harrisburg. Bowie has five games remaining and Harrisburg has six. After tonight, Bowie ends the regular season with a four-game series at Richmond. Last night, Joel Guzman and Brandon Waring homered in the Baysox 6-2 win. Bob McCrory pitched three scoreless to get that win. Guzman now has hit 32 homers, one off the club record of 33, set by Walter Young in 2004. The 26-year-old Guzman has homered four times over the last seven games. Second baseman Ryan Adams is batting .301-13-65 and leads the league with 43 doubles and 153 hits. Adams is 2nd in the league in extra-base hits and 6th in average. He's batting .333 since the All-Star break. Joe Mahoney's bat has cooled a bit in August, but he's still batting .320-9-29 in 47 Bowie games. Lefty Rick Zagone (4-5, 4.46) pitches for the Baysox tonight as the chase for that final Eastern League playoff spot reaches its final days. If Bowie and Harrisburg wind up tied for second place, Bowie would host a one-game playoff on Tuesday. The team that finishes in second will play Altoona in the first-round of the playoffs.
