Bergesen, Jones and Gregg on the Orioles' win over the Angels

Just minutes after he picked up just his second win of the year, Brad Bergesen was passing around credit to his teammates.

"I think Craig Tatum throwing out those guys tonight was huge for me. You get a guy on and you find those little breaks and he came up huge twice tonight and Reynolds made a couple of big plays," he said after the Orioles' 3-2 win over Los Angeles. Bergesen gave up just two runs and six hits over six innings as he improved to 2-6 with a 5.54 ERA. Manager Buck Showalter said he pounded the strike zone to key his success. "It has a lot to do with it," Bergesen said. "My stuff isn't that plus-plus, nasty, big league type of stuff. For me to fall behind in counts makes it tough for me. I have to pound the zone. There were a lot of times tonight I got into a good tempo and was able to work quick tonight. "It starts with the starting pitching. We need to get into a nice little roll right now and this was a good, all-around team win. We got the runs when we needed them, big defensive plays and the bullpen was outstanding." This was the O's fourth straight start of six innings or more (ERA of 3.04 in that span) after they had just four starts of six innings or longer in a 22-game stretch. Adam Jones got the Orioles offense started with his 17th homer of the year and fourth in eight games in the fourth inning. "I want to have a big second half," Jones said. "I was a little frustrated going into the break. This game is bigger than me. Just need to have the right attitude and I can have a big second half for the team." He was asked if his sac fly to drive in a run in the fifth was as pleasing as his home run. "Home run is a home run, nothing compares to a home run," Jones said. "But, hey, I got the RBI. I don't care how it happens. I don't give a rat's (bottom), I got the RBI." After Jim Johnson had a seven-pitch seventh inning and Koji Uehara a nine-pitch eighth, Kevin Gregg came on in the ninth. A night earlier he gave up a ninth-inning grand slam to Vernon Wells, but this time he got Wells to ground out on the way to his 16th save. "Part of my job," Gregg said. "I saw Vernon a lot last year. I knew if I executed my pitches, I would be all right. Went out there and executed them and got him out. "That was a well-played game, I think, on both sides. It starts out with what Bergy established early in the game. That is kind of how we want to draw it up, the way he did it." After a two-out double by Alberto Callaspo put the tie run on second base, Gregg fell behind the next hitter, Howie Kendrick, 3-0 in the count. He then fired three straight strikes to fan Kendrick and send the Oriole fans home happy. "Just tried to get to where I was comfortable," said Gregg. "Got to have a little chaos out there."
