Bergesen tendered contract, Reyes and Eyre non-tendered (updated)

The Orioles just announced that they've non-tendered pitchers Jo-Jo Reyes and Willie Eyre, and outfielder Luke Scott. Brad Bergesen was offered a contract shortly before the midnight deadline. Scott, Reyes and Eyre have become free agents, but they could re-sign with the Orioles. Scott is a possibility to remain in the organization. Both sides are open to working out a new contract. Reyes went 5-8 with a 5.40 ERA in 20 starts with the Blue Jays and 2-3 with a 6.16 ERA in nine games (five starts) with the Orioles after they claimed him off waivers. He made $439,100 last season. Last week's trade for left-hander Dana Eveland made Reyes more expendable. I didn't expect him to stick around before that deal, but his exit became more of a certainty after the Winter Meetings. Eyre was designated for assignment last week to make room for Eveland on the 40-man roster. He went 2-2 with a 3.44 ERA in 19 relief appearances after signing as a minor league free agent on Aug. 3. I had removed him from the list of arbitration-eligible players after the Orioles designated him, but he's included in the team's press release. The Orioles offered contracts to arbitration-eligible pitchers Bergesen, Eveland, Jeremy Guthrie, Jim Johnson and Darren O'Day, infielder Robert Andino and outfielder Adam Jones. Their agents will make counter proposals, and the two sides likely will split the difference. That's pretty much how it works. It's rare for the Orioles to go to arbitration, and rarer for them to lose. It's an ugly process that brings hurt feelings, and it's best avoided. Hearing dates will be announced later, but it's hoped that deals can be struck beforehand. Update: The Orioles agreed to terms with Eveland on a one-year, $750,000 contract, according to MLBTradeRumors. Bergesen made $434,000 this year while going 2-7 with a 5.70 ERA in 34 games. He was 2-7 with a 5.78 ERA in 12 starts, and he posted a 5.59 ERA in 22 relief appearances. However, he had a 3.24 ERA in eight August games. Bergesen was demoted to Triple-A Norfolk in June and went 2-1 with a 1.64 ERA in three starts. MLBTradeRumors projected that Bergesen's salary could jump to $1.4 million next year. The Orioles now have 38 players on their 40-man roster. Minor league note: Former Orioles outfielder Mike Devereaux has been hired as hitting coach at Single-A Asheville, a Colorado Rockies affiliate. Devereaux served as field coach at Single-A Frederick this year and at low Single-A Delmarva in 2010. The Orioles didn't offer Devereaux a contract after this season, but he wasn't alone. Plenty of other coaches are in limbo while the Orioles piece together their minor league staffs.
