Buck Britton signs with Dodgers (updated)

The Orioles wanted to re-sign infielder Buck Britton, who spent seven years in their organization before becoming a minor league free agent. However, they sensed that he had a better offer waiting for him and figured they were going to lose him. Sure enough, the Dodgers signed Britton to a minor league contract today that most likely includes an invitation to spring training. Update: Britton did receive a spring invite, and his contract includes an opt-out clause. Britton, 28, tweeted the news this morning.

Britton, the older brother of closer Zach Britton, batted .317/.378/.464 in 61 games at Double-A Bowie and .254/.305/.439 in 59 games at Triple-A Norfolk. He's a career .280/.338/.410 hitter since the Orioles chose him in the 35th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Lubbock Christian University. Orioles manager Buck Showalter liked Britton's versatility. He's played all four infield positions and left and right field, and he took the mound twice this season when Norfolk ran out of pitchers. Also, Showalter respected Britton's attitude and work ethic. On multiple occasions, he would summon Britton from minor league camp for spring training games and attempt to give him a few innings in the field. Britton probably would have received an invite to camp if he re-signed with the Orioles, but that ship has sailed.
