FORT MYERS, Fla. - Orioles pitching prospect Hunter Harvey is having precautionary X-rays taken on his shin after being hit by a comebacker today in a minor league game in Fort Myers.
The Orioles ran their winning streak to four games today with a 5-3 win over a Twins split-squad. Rule 5 pick Logan Verrett earned the save by stranding a runner at second base in the ninth.
Verrett has allowed two runs in 10 innings, with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Here's a sampling of manager Buck Showalter's postgame comments:
On Miguel Gonzalez: "Good. The 15-pitch at-bat, he was supposed to go 85, but after he had to go so deep in the tank there, we didn't want to keep pushing the envelope. But he was good. Good stuff. He's crisp."
On Steve Pearce: "He enjoys any type of schedule. He showed us he enjoys that one that starts in April, too. Stevie had, what, two days off? We tried to back off him a couple days a little bit. He's pretty sound mechanically. He's not going to get out of whack too much. He's pretty solid.
"You call it exhibition games because you want to exhibit things that make people confident that you're really going to contribute. Stevie's got a little track record with us now that allows him to have some bumps in the road, but he doesn't look at it that way. He's not ever going to take anything for granted. That's why we like him so much."
On Pearce not changing his approach simply because he's got a roster spot: "That's why we like him. When you've been through some of the challenges and constant trials Steve has been to constantly prove himself, I don't think he's ever going to say, 'I've got this figured out.' He's never going to take anything for granted."
On the Orioles' spring training success: "There's not any blueprint. Everybody's got that. It just doesn't happen. Sometimes, there are no reasons why. I know I'm supposed to be able to have them, but I could say there are adjustments being made to some of the things. We have a new hitting coach. There's an adjustment period for everything. We've got some guys in different situations in their career than they've been in the past. Whether it be a Pearce, whether it be a Delmon Young. Delmon was in here last year trying to make the club. Caleb Joseph was trying to get on the radar screen. It changes each year and some of the things last year give you a mulligan here and there."
On Paul Janish at shortstop: "Good, good. I was trying to get him three at-bats. I told him after the fifth, 'You know, if you don't get up here you won't play the sixth, so you get one more at bat. He said, 'No, I feel good.' I'll be interested to see how he feels tomorrow. Of course, the very first play he's playing way up the middle and he has to get a ball way over in the hole. He can catch it. His glove is a friendly place for us. When you talk about just pure defenders, Paul's got to be in the conversation."
On Ryan Webb: "OK. He kept the ball on the ground. He threw it over. Probably some cobwebs kicking out of there. Hopefully, he can take his good health and run with it."
