Bundy completes his start (with Gausman update)

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Dylan Bundy was tagged with an unearned run tonight in his two innings against the Boston Red Sox. Bundy allowed one hit, a two-out double by Mitch Maier in the second, walked two and struck out one. His fastball was mostly 90-92 mph, according to the NESN radar gun readings. The run scored when right fielder Conor Jackson had trouble picking up the ball on Maier's hit, allowing Will Middlebrooks to race home and tie the game at 1-1. Bundy issued a two-out walk to Jackie Bradley Jr. in the first inning after retiring Brock Holt on a grounder to second base and Jonny Gomes on a fly ball to right. Mike Napoli grounded into a force on the next pitch to end the inning. Bundy threw 12 pitches in the first, five for strikes. Middlebrooks walked with one out in the second after Jarrod Saltalamacchia struck out. Mike Carp flied to deep left field for the second out, but Maier lined a double into the right-field corner. Bundy threw 23 pitches, 13 for strikes - leaving him at 35 and 18 over two innings. Bundy's first two appearances came in relief. He gave up two hits, issued a walk and struck out two batters in his debut against the Minnesota Twins on Feb. 23, and he shut out the New York Yankees on one hit, with one walk and one strikeout, in two innings on Feb. 27. Kevin Gausman has entered the game in the third inning with the Orioles leading 2-1. Lew Ford is 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI off Red Sox left-hander Felix Doubront. Nolan Reimold's RBI single in the third moved the Orioles ahead 2-1. Alexi Casilla doubled on Doubront's first pitch of the game and scored on Ford's single. Steve Pearce is wearing No. 99 tonight after his No. 28 jersey was left back in Sarasota. Update: So much for Gausman working two innings in relief. Gausman's pitch count stood at 22, including 18 strikes, after his first two innings. He returned for the bottom of the fifth and retired the side in order on 11 pitches, striking out Gomes to finish up. Talk about impressive. Gausman allowed two hits in three scoreless innings, with no walks and three strikeouts. He threw 33 pitches, 25 for strikes. Gausman's fastball topped out at 96 mph in the third, and his change-up was nasty as usual. He struck out Gomes looking and allowed a two-out single to Bradley. Saltalamacchia singled leading off the fourth, but Middlebrooks struck out looking at a 95 mph two-seamer. Gausman retired the last two batters without the ball leaving the infield. He was back in the dugout after only eight pitches, six for strikes. Before tonight, Gausman had allowed two runs and six hits, with three walks and six strikeouts, in 4 2/3 innings over three relief appearances. Ford is 3-for-3. He lined a single up the middle in the fifth that almost decapitated Andrew Bailey. The Orioles left the bases loaded in the fifth and continue to lead 2-1.
