Burnett not allowing contact (Phillies win 3-2)

Right-hander A.J. Burnett is on his game after two innings. He already has three strikeouts, including the last two of the second inning. He caught both Ian Desmond and Bryce Harper looking at a called strike three. Right-hander Tanner Roark was not as fluid as he wanted to be in the first inning. He gave up a hit to Jimmy Rollins who stole second base. He also walked Ryan Howard. But he was able strike out Marlon Byrd to end the threat. Roark then rebounded with a three-up, three-down second inning. The Nationals are 17-6 (.739) in August. Burnett has allowed 14 earned runs in his last three starts. Update: In the bottom of the fourth versus Roark, the Phillies got a one-out double from Ryan Howard off the wall in right. A Marlon Byrd single sent Howard to third. Dominic Brown brought Howard home with a RBI single that got under the glove of Danny Espinosa and the Phillies lead 1-0. Update II: Burnett has been on tonight. He has 10 strikeouts through five innings. In two of the innings, the third and the fifth, every out was a strikeout. He hasnt had this many strikeouts since July 1 vs. Miami (10). Update III: Roark had a long at-bat in the top of the fifth before striking out. The Phillies took advantage with their first chance in the last of the fifth. Cody Asche cranked his ninth homer of the season, a solo shot over the right field wall, and the Phillies lead 2-0. Update IV: With one out, Anthony Rendon with a solo homer in the sixth, his 17th round tripper of the season, and the Nationals are on the board, down 2-1. But Burnett struck out Jayson Werth and Adam LaRoche to end the inning. Burnett has 12 strikeouts through six frames. Update V: Roark finishes six innings, allows five hits, two runs, both earned, one walk, and struck out two. He twirled 103 pitches, 61 for strikes. Mark of a good pitcher on a night where maybe not all of his pitches were working the way he wanted, he kept his team in the game. He also battled in each at-bat. All you can ask. In the bottom of the seventh, Brown appeared to have a lead-off double. But on video review, the umpires called Brown out because he came off the bag on Harper's throw to Danny Espinosa. Brown gets a single and called out at second. Carlos Ruiz followed with a solo shot and the Phillies lead 3-1. So the video review saved the Nationals at least one run. Update VI: Wilson Ramos smacked a solo homer with two outs in the ninth off of Jonathan Papelbon, but it was not enough. The Nationals manage just six hits in 3-2 setback to the Phillies. Burnett finished with 12 strikeouts.
