Caleb Joseph and Ubaldo Jimenez comments after O's win over Toronto

For eight innings tonight, from the second through the ninth, the Orioles did not score and were held to just four hits. For just the second time all season, they failed to hit a homer. They let a 3-0 lead turn into a 3-3 tie.

But in the end, they won. It was the first win in Orioles team history on a walk-off passed ball, according to STATS. Caleb Joseph charged down the line from third to score the game winner, as they won 4-3 in 10 innings over Toronto to improve to 9-4.

Joseph's double started a two-out rally with the bases empty against right-hander Joe Biagini, a Rule 5 pick. Joseph talked about pulling out the game and winning without a longball tonight. Was that important?

Joseph-Orange-Dugout-Congrats.jpg"Oh yeah. Look at that inning right there," he said of the last of the 10th. "You have a two-out double and Joey (Rickard) makes contact against a really tough pitcher. Manny (Machado), who is being super selective and patient. Even (Adam) Jonsey. Most guys maybe swing at that pitch. It looks like a fastball coming in, but he takes it and sure enough, we get a clank there.

"This team has been doing that all year. We can still hit home runs. But we like the attitude this team has taken. It's a very unselfish team. I don't think people feel like they have to do it all. I don't think CD (Chris Davis), Wheaty (Matt Wieters) or Jonesy feel like they have to do it. They trust the lineup one through nine can pick each either up versus having to go up there and create a mound of sawdust because they are trying to win the game by themselves."

Has Joseph ever scored on a walk-off passed ball before?

"Probably never. And especially to get drenched with water after. That was pretty cool," he said. "They are all big games, but to have an opportunity to take the series tomorrow is big for us.

"Anytime you win, especially against an AL East opponent, especially against Toronto, it is super fun. We really battled through that game. They were full-court pressing us there for a while and our pitchers did a great job. We kept passing the baton (on offense). That is what we did in the last inning and sure enough, we were able to capitalize on a mistake."

Staked to a first-inning 3-0 lead, O's starter Ubaldo Jimenez pitched only five innings and seemed to constantly be in trouble. He allowed five hits and two runs, throwing 110 pitches.

"These guys have power throughout the count," Joseph said of the Toronto batters. "You want to get every hitter in three pitches or less. There is a mind game going on, too. You try to get guys to chase pitches and you don't want to give them a cookie. Hard to go seven against a lineup like this. (Jimenez) just didn't have that go-to today with that sinker. It was there at times. He's going to be able to get deeper when that is just locked in."

Jimenez pitched out of jams the first two innings and then gave up a run in the third inning, which ended with him at 70 pitches. But over his five innings, Toronto went just 1-for-7 against him with runners in scoring position.

"It was a battle from the first pitch," Jimenez said. "It seemed like I was able to get ahead of the hitters and then I found a way to make them go to first base. But I battled and didn't give up."

Was it a night where the quality of his stuff was there but the command was not?

"Yeah I think it (my pitches) was probably too good," Jimenez said. "They were moving everywhere, it was moving a lot. I felt like I was close in the zone but not close enough. They were moving too much.

"It hurts (to be ahead and not put hitters away). It really hurts. You work hard every day to get out there and get ahead of hitters. Then you walk a guy after getting ahead. You have to find a way to make the next pitch," he said.

In seven games against Toronto since Sept. 16, 2014, Jimenez is 4-1 with a 2.78 ERA. He made six starts in the seven games, allowing two or fewer earned runs five times.

The Orioles are 6-1 at home with a team ERA of 2.11. They entered tonight's contest leading the majors in team ERA at home.
