Pitching one night after Chris Tillman held Detroit scoreless on one hit over seven innings, right-hander Andrew Cashner could not follow that up tonight at Camden Yards.
Detroit ended a 22-innings scoreless run scoring once against him in the first and then opened up a big early lead in the second on its way to an 9-5 win at Oriole Park.
The Orioles fall to 7-20 for the year. They have lost six of seven, 12 of 14 and 14 of their last 17 games. They are 2-6 on this homestand and 4-10 at home for the season.
A walk and three singles got Detroit the 1-0 lead in the first with Nicholas Castellanos driving in the game's first run. O's pitchers began tonight with a 8.65 first-inning ERA, which ranked next to last in the majors, ahead of only Seattle at 9.00.
Leonys Martin singled in the second run in the second and Cashner faced Miguel Cabrera with runners on second and third and two outs. Cabrera won the battle taking a breaking ball onto the right field flag court for a three-run home run and a 5-0 lead. He hit his third homer of the year on the 0-1 pitch and it was No. 465 of his career, which ties him for 34th all-time with Dave Winfield.
Two innings later Cabrera's double eluded a diving Craig Gentry in left center and two runs scored for a 7-0 lead. That gave Cabrera his 11th career five-RBI game. Through the fourth inning he was 3-for-3 with a homer and five RBIs.
In 67 career games versus Baltimore pitching, Cabrera has hit 22 homers with 68 RBIs.
Cashner had his shortest start of the season, lasting just four innings and 87 pitches. He gave up seven hits and seven runs (six earned) with three walks and four strikeouts. He falls to 1-4 with a 4.76 ERA.
Over his past three starts, Cashner has a 7.31 ERA, allowing 22 hits and 14 runs (13 earned) over 16 innings. He has lost three consecutive starts, two versus the Tigers.
Against lefty Francisco Liriano the Orioles scored in the fifth. Anthony Santander led off with his first career triple and scored on Gentry's groundout and it was 7-1. Detroit went ahead 8-1 against Pedro Araujo in the seventh. With two outs, JaCoby Jones doubled and scored on James McCann's single to left.
The Orioles made it more interesting with a four-run seventh against Liriano and two relievers. Detroit pitchers walked three and hit a batter in the inning. The O's scored on Chance Sisco's pinch-hit, bases loaded hit by pitch, Jace Peterson's bases loaded walk and Manny Machado's two-run single. He has 22 RBIs.
Detroit's Victor Martinez homered to lead off the ninth off Darren O'Day for the game's final run. O'Day has allowed three homers in his last six games and O's pitchers have allowed 59 runs the past 10 games.
The teams will break their 1-1 tie in this series on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Kevin Gausman (1-2, 4.66 ERA) pitches against left-hander Daniel Norris (0-1, 4.91 ERA) at 1:05 p.m.
Postgame quotes
Cashner on allowing the homer to Cabrera: "Yeah with the base open, I've just got to make a better pitch. I was trying to go curveball in the dirt there and I left it up."
Cashner on giving up groundball hits off his sinker: "You've just got to keep throwing it. Push comes to shove, you've got to keep pounding it in there. A couple sinkers down and in were good. I just needed them maybe a little more off the plate, but they were perfect pitches, just found holes."
Cashner on every player wanting to be the one to help turn it around: "I think we have a lot of guys in here who want to do that, myself included. But I just didn't get it done tonight, but I'll have a chance in five days."
Trey Mancini on whether players trying to be the key guy is a problem: "It could. I don't know if we are necessarily doing that or that's our biggest problem right now. Yeah sometimes especially offensively, yeah going up and trying a little too hard. Trying to do too much. Baseball is a tough game, it's a cruel game. It is hard to contain yourself sometimes when you are in the heat of the moment. But you've got to find a way to go up and relax."
Mancini on not following up on Friday's win: "Yeah, it's very disappointing. Obviously when we've been struggling, you want to string a couple of wins together and get a win streak started before our road trip. But at the end of the day, we still have a chance to win the series tomorrow and we're going to come out and try to do that."
