Checking on minor league free agents (updated)

As the Orioles were closing out their season, winning five straight to finish at .500 for only the second time in franchise history, they already were plotting for ways to improve in 2016.

Various lists were compiled as team executives gathered with manager Buck Showalter. Pending major league, minor league and international free agents were discussed, debated and either kept on the club's radar or discarded.

parmelee-high-fives-in-dugout-gray-sidebar.jpgBaseball America has revealed the first wave of minor league players who elected free agency, including former Orioles outfielder/first baseman Chris Parmelee - reported over the weekend - and left-hander Cesar Cabral. Parmelee batted .216/.255/.433 with seven doubles, one triple, four home runs and nine RBIs in 32 games. Cabral made two appearances with the Orioles, walking one batter and striking out one in a scoreless inning.

Parmelee accepted his outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk and suffered a broken left forearm when hit by a Matt Moore pitch. The Orioles designated Cabral for assignment on Sept. 6 after claiming infielder Andy Wilkins off waivers from the Dodgers.

Other free agents with Orioles/local ties include infielders Jemile Weeks, Steve Lombardozzi and Steve Tolleson, pitcher Todd Redmond, outfielder LJ Hoes and former University of Maryland outfielder Justin Maxwell.

You may have forgotten about Redmond. The Orioles signed him off waivers from the Reds in February 2013 and lost him a month later on a waiver claim by the Blue Jays.

Showalter would love to have Tolleson back in the organization, so keep him in mind. There's no chance at a reunion involving Weeks or Lombardozzi.

The Orioles expressed interest in Astros minor league outfielder Alex Presley over the summer and he's now available to sign with any team. They also considered Hoes, one of the players they traded to the Astros on July 31, 2013 for pitcher Bud Norris.

Hoes only played in eight games with the Astros this summer, going 4-for-15 with an RBI.

Update: Upon further review, Hoes remains on the Astros' 40-man roster and is not a free agent. Baseball America is making the correction. So am I.

Athletics left-hander Brad Mills also is available. He's 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA in four career starts with the Orioles. Just saying ...

I'm also saying that Mills made one start for the A's this year on Aug. 14 and allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings at Camden Yards. Maybe they finally figured him out.

Here is the entire list of minor league free agents. Pick your favorites. And yes, every team strives to improve its depth in the farm system. It's not just a Baltimore thing.

Baseball America also confirmed, as reported last week by MASNsports.com, that the Orioles re-signed minor league free agents Nick Addition, Ozzie Martinez and Garabez Rosa. The publication omitted Corban Joseph, Quincy Latimore and Audry Perez.
