Chen completes seven innings (Markakis with walk-off single in 10th)

The only thing lacking in Wei-Yin Chen's start tonight is a win. Chen will have to settle for a no-decision after being removed from the game in the top of the eighth with the score tied 2-2. Evan Meek is making his 10th relief appearance. Ryan Flaherty and Jonathan Schoop singled off Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but David Lough bounced into a 4-6-3 double play. Chen escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the top half by striking out Alex Gordon on his 102nd pitch. He allowed two runs and nine hits, walked two and struck out six. Chen pumped his fist as he walked off the mound after fanning Gordon. I don't recall seeing him do that very often. Before tonight, Chen's previous high in innings this season was 6 1/3 on April 14 against the Rays. He hadn't completed seven innings since Aug. 21, 2013. In Chen's last 52 starts, the Orioles have scored three runs or fewer while he's been in the game 33 times. Tonight's attendance: 34,941 Update: Manager Buck Showalter played the matchup game in the eighth, using Meek, Brian Matusz and Darren O'Day to keep the score tied. Matusz faced one batter, Mike Moustakas, and retired him on a grounder. Moutstakas is 0-for-9 against Matusz, who has stranded all nine inherited runners this season and 55 of 60 dating back to 2012. Is that good? Alcides Escobar flied out against O'Day to end the inning. Wade Davis has replaced Guthrie in the bottom of the eighth. Update II: We're heading to the top of the 10th inning because this game was moving too quickly. The Orioles put the potential winning run on base in the ninth when Adam Jones led off by reaching on an infield hit. Matt Wieters ran the count full and flied to deep right-center field, J.J. Hardy popped up and Ryan Flaherty grounded to third. The Orioles are 1-0 in extra innings. Update III: Nick Markakis singled down the left field line with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Jonathan Schoop and give the Orioles a 3-2 win. Royals left-hander Danny Duffy hit Schoop leading off the inning, threw wildly to second after fielding David Lough's bunt and threw high to first after fielding Jemile Weeks' bunt to load the bases with no outs. Nelson Cruz struck out, but Markakis dumped a single inside the left field line. Tommy Hunter retired five of the six batters he faced, and Zach Britton struck out Jarrod Dyson in the 10th to strand a runner on second. The Orioles improve to 12-11.
