NEW YORK - Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen is shutting out the New York Yankees on two hits over the first four innings, which is the good news. Chen is receiving the usual run support, which his the bad news. The game is scoreless in the fifth inning, with four Orioles hits going to waste against Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda. Chen hasn't picked up a win in his last nine regular season starts, going 0-5 with a 4.36 ERA in 53 2/3 innings. The Orioles have totaled 15 runs in those nine starts while he's been on the mound. In his last 26 starts, the Orioles have scored three runs or fewer 18 times while he's been in the game. A little help here. The Orioles have scored 26 runs in the 12 games that Chen has lost in the majors, an average of 2.17 runs per game. The Orioles are 9-0 when Chen pitches seven innings or more, and he's 7-0 in those outings. Keep that one stored in your back pocket for later. The only hits off Chen tonight are Brennan Boesch's single in the second inning - the ball deflected off the glove of a lunging Manny Machado at third base - and Lyle Overbay's leadoff single in the third. Robinson Cano walked in the fourth. Nolan Reimold singled in the third, making Orioles designated hitters 3-for-38, but he struck out to end the fifth. Matt Wieters snapped an 0-for-14 streak with a leadoff single in the fifth. Update: Chen's really going to need the support now, since he's allowed three runs in the fifth inning. Boesch and Francisco Cervelli opened with singles, and two fly balls - the last by Jayson Nix - broke the scoreless tie. Brett Gardner followed with a two-run homer, the ball slamming high off the right field foul pole, to increase New York's lead to 3-0. It really should be called the fair pole, but I digress... Chen had thrown 59 pitches going into the inning. He's up to 77 as we head to the top of the sixth. Update II: Chen is done after six innings. He allowed three runs and six hits, with one walk, two strikeouts and one home run. He threw 92 pitches, 63 for strikes. Rule 5 pick T.J. McFarland replaced Chen in the seventh, only his second appearance of the season. The official scorer has removed the error from Machado in the fifth inning and given Vernon Wells a hit. The Orioles still haven't gotten a runner to second base. Adam Jones reached on an infield hit leading off the seventh, but Chris Davis struck out for the second time, Wieters flied out and J.J. Hardy grounded out. Update III: The Orioles failed to win a fourth consecutive series in the Bronx, losing to the Yankees, 3-0. Kuroda shut them out on five hits. Eighteen outs came via ground balls. Nick Markakis was the only Oriole to touch second base. He reached on an error with one out in the ninth and moved up on Adam Jones' grounder, but Chris Davis struck out for the third time. R.A. Dickey was the last pitcher to toss a complete-game shutout against the Orioles, on June 18, 2012. All three games of this series were completed in under three hours. An absolute miracle.
