Chris Davis hits a 453-foot homer to lead the Orioles to victory

Chris Davis has been called "Crush" this year and today that nickname fit. Davis crushed a breaking pitch from lefty Colt Hynes in the eighth inning into the right-field stands for a three-run shot that broke a 3-3 tie as the Orioles beat San Diego 10-3 to sweep the two-game series. It was homer No. 41 for Davis and traveled 453 feet. That ties that blast for the second longest homer in the 10-year history of Petco Park. Davis, who has four homers his last eight games, now has 106 RBIs. He has 25 multi-RBI games on the season. The O's took a 3-0 lead into the last of the sixth and Miguel Gonzalez was cruising with a three-hitter but a walk, single and Jedd Gyorko's three-run homer suddenly tied the game. Gonzalez did not get a decision allowing six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts over six innings. He had given up 15 runs (10 earned) over 8 1/3 innings in his previous two starts. Earlier, J.J. Hardy hit a solo homer in the second for the Orioles and they added a run in the fourth with the help of two errors and one an inning later on Manny Machado's RBI single. After Davis' homer broke the 3-3 tie, Matt Wieters doubled and scored the O's seventh run on a Brian Roberts sac fly. The O's added three runs in the ninth on a Wieters run-scoring grounder and Hardy's two-run single. The game was tied after seven innings before the O's scored seven times over their last two at-bats. Adam Jones had three singles today and he went 7-for-9 in this series. Jones is 12-for-24 over his past six games. Machado went 2-for-4 and is batting .360 (9-for-25) over his last six games. With the win, the Orioles improved to 2-2 against San Diego, 30-26 on the road, 7-4 vs. the National League and 21-12-4 in 37 series in 2013. They are now 63-51 and after an off day Thursday the Orioles play three games in San Francisco over the weekend.
