Chris Davis hits tie-breaking homer in 10th as Orioles top Seattle

The pitching match-up between right-handers Kevin Gausman and Felix Hernandez lived up to the hype. So did the Orioles' play this year in extra innings.

Chris Davis led off the 10th with a homer to right field off left-hander Charlie Furbush to snap the 1-1 tie as the Orioles beat Seattle 2-1 in 10 innings.

The game ended on a replay review. Zach Britton fielded Robinson Cano's dribbler and threw high and wide toward first base. Cano was called safe, but replay showed first baseman Davis had kept his foot on the bag long enough and the review confirmed that for the game's final out.

Davis Hits White.jpgThe Orioles improved the American League's best extra-inning record to 10-3. They are now 57-45 overall and lead the American League East by three games over New York.

With their 15th win in the last 21 games the Orioles moved to a season-high 12 games over the .500 mark.

Furbush had just entered the game when Davis hit an 83 mph slider on a 1-2 count over the wall for his 17th homer and fifth off a lefty. As he batted in the 10th, Davis had just 12 hits over his last 84 at-bats, but he came through to give the O's the lead.

Three relievers teamed to pitch 3 1/3 scoreless innings with Darren O'Day getting the win and Britton his 19th save after Brian Matusz went 1 2/3 innings.

Gausman pitched out of a two-on jam in the first, settled in and went 6 2/3 innings. Gausman gave up seven hits and one run with three walks and strikeouts. He threw 103 pitches and gave up one run or less for the sixth time in nine starts.

Gausman's outing was the fifth straight very strong start by the Orioles. Their starters have pitched to an ERA of 1.29 over that stretch with five quality starts. The young right-hander certainly held his own tonight against one of baseball's best pitchers.

Hernandez tied Tom Seaver's major league record tonight by recording his 13th consecutive start of seven innings or more while allowing two runs or less.

King Felix went seven innings and gave up five hits and one run with no walks and 10 strikeouts. He threw 102 pitches and has an ERA of 1.36 over those 13 starts.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the second when Nelson Cruz hit a line drive homer to left on the first pitch of the inning. For Cruz, it was homer No. 29 and ended a 12-game homerless stretch where he went 6-for-44. Cruz now has six consecutive seasons of 20 or more homers and 75 or more RBIs.

The O's led until the last of the sixth. Cano led off with a triple off the glove of right fielder Nick Markakis and he scored on a Kendrys Morales sac fly to right to tie the game at 1-1. Markakis' throw home was high and just a bit late to get the runner.

So Orioles pitching has allowed just one run in two games as the O's take the first two games of a series where Seattle started Hisashi Iwakuma and Hernandez.
