BOSTON - I can't believe I just typed that sentence.
Chris Davis has entered the game in the bottom of the 16th after manager Buck Showalter ran out of relievers.
Brian Matusz, scheduled to start tomorrow night, walked to the bullpen. However, Davis was the one warming up after serving as the designated hitter.
This way, the Orioles don't really lose their DH. He just happens to double as a pitcher.
Davis threw a 91 mph fastball to Jarrod Saltalamacchia before striking him out on a changeup. Will Middlebrooks flied out on an 88 mph fastball, but Marlon Byrd reached on Wilson Betemit's error at third base.
Mike Aviles followed with a double into left-center field. The game appeared to be over, but Adam Jones threw to J.J. Hardy, who fired the ball to home plate to cut down Byrd.
Now this game has turned epic.
Nobody is warming in the Orioles' bullpen. Davis is working on a lifetime of rest.
Former Orioles outfielder and first-round pick Darnell McDonald is now pitching for the Red Sox. Betemit drew a leadoff walk and was thrown out trying to steal.
Update: Adam Jones hit a three-run homer off Darnell McDonald - he cleared the Green Monster on an 83 mph pitch that we'll call a changeup - to give the Orioles a 9-6 lead in the 17th inning.
Davis, who apparently pitched for the Longview High Lobos in Texas, will try to finish off the Red Sox in the bottom of the 17th.
According to ESPN's Jason Stark, Davis can become the first American League position player to win a game as a pitcher since Rocky Colavito in 1968
J.J. Hardy doubled with one out for his career-high fifth hit. Nick Markakis walked and Jones connected for his eighth home run.
The Orioles can take over sole possession of first place in the AL East and possess the best record in baseball at 19-9. The Nationals play later tonight.
Update II: Davis put the first two Red Sox on base in the 17th, but he struck out Adrian Gonzalez - seriously - and got McDonald to hit into a 6-4-3 double play.
Unreal.
The game lasted 6 hours, 7 minutes.
We must be having fun now, right?
