Chris Tillman takes the loss and Orioles' win streak ends at five

Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman was a pitch away from getting out of a third-inning jam. Then he was a pitch away from allowing just two runs. But both times the Colorado Rockies hitters won the battle.

Tillman, who was 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA his last four starts, allowed four runs in the third and six over five innings tonight as the Orioles lost 6-3 to the Rockies. The Orioles' five-game winning streak ends as they fall to 58-41.

The Orioles were 12-0 in Tillman's home starts until tonight. He had allowed just four runs in 28 innings over those past four starts, so tonight was a rare sight.

Colorado had the bases loaded with two outs in the third and Tillman had a 2-2 count on Carlos Gonzalez, who lined a two-run double to left. The next hitter, rookie Trevor Story, was down 1-2 on the count when he lined a two-run single to left for the 4-0 lead. Colorado went 3-for-4 with runners in scoring position as Tillman needed 36 pitches to get through the third inning. The Rockies added two more in the fifth on a wild pitch and Nolan Arenado's RBI double.

Over five frames, Tillman allowed nine hits and six runs to tie his season high for the third time. He falls to 14-3 with an ERA of 3.47. The Orioles were 18-3 in his 21 starts coming into tonight. O's right-hander Tyler Wilson came on and provided a perfect outing of long relief. He pitched four innings and retired all 12 batters with three strikeouts on 40 pitches.

Down 6-0, Adam Jones connected on a two-run homer to left in the fifth off Rockies starter Chad Bettis. It was No. 18 for Jones, who had hit just one homer his previous 21 games and none in his previous 12. Jones added the O's third run of the night in the last of the eighth when he led off with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Orioles' six-game home winning streak was snapped as they lost for the first time since July 8 at Camden Yards. They are 37-15 on the season at home and 11-2 over the last 13 games.

The Orioles have lost just one series at home all year (to Seattle) and need to win tomorrow to avoid dropping their second. Dylan Bundy (3-2, 3.30 ERA) makes his third start and pitches against Rockies right-hander Jon Gray (6-4, 4.12 ERA).
