Corbin "felt really good" for six innings in no-decision against Mets

NEW YORK - Saturday night turned into a no-decision for left-hander Patrick Corbin in the Nationals' 4-3 loss to the surging New York Mets.

Corbin allowed back-to-back solo homers to J.D. Davis and Wilson Ramos in the fourth inning. He surrendered a single to Michael Conforto for the Mets' first hit in the second inning.

But that was it.

Corbin said he was able to refocus pretty quickly after the homers. He felt pretty good about how he was pitching during the game.

"I felt good. Solo homers aren't going to kill you," Corbin said. "We were still in it. Offense got a couple runs early on their guy (Noah Syndergaard), who's a really good pitcher, we know these games are tough, they're going to be close and two good teams out there battling and just didn't come out on our end tonight."

The southpaw struck out eight and walked one. He threw 94 pitches, 62 for strikes. For Corbin, it was a pleasant bounce back from allowing five runs on seven hits last week in Arizona.

"Felt really good, (despite a) couple good swings there," Corbin said. "Maybe they were mistakes, or the wrong pitch, but overall felt pretty good. Thought we mixed it up with them well, faced 'em, that was the fifth time this season. They've seen me, I've seen them, so really nothing new for us. Try to go out there, compete."

Davis hit a 3-2 slider, the ninth pitch in the at-bat. In the sixth inning, Corbin struck out Davis with another slider. Did Corbin make an adjustment in the third at-bat against Davis?

"Just better located slider there. Those guys in the middle of the order, they can do some damage. They're the hottest team in baseball right now, and we knew that. We've gone through stretches like that as well, but it wasn't like we were out of (it) today or yesterday. Just two tough losses, so we gotta come back tomorrow and try to get a win in this series."

After a starter leaves the game, he becomes a spectator like everyone else. Watching the Nats lose two games in a row in the eighth or ninth innings this weekend is, of course, not fun. But Corbin understands that his club has played well for most of these two games to be in good positions to win.

"They're on a hot streak now," Corbin said. "We've gone through it this year. It's not like we're playing bad baseball right now. It's two games, there's a long season left and it's fun when you got a crowd like that, that's what we want. Hopefully it's the same crowd tomorrow and we'll be ready to go."
