Left-hander Patrick Corbin was wild to begin game two, having to labor to just get out of the first inning.
The southpaw allowed a leadoff single to Charlie Blackmon and two walks in the first inning but escaped without allowing a run thanks to a big double play ignited by Anthony Rendon. However, Corbin was taxed for 27 pitches.
Then Corbin fired three strikeouts in the second inning. In the third, the Rockies Trevor Story belted a one-out triple. But Corbin managed to wiggle out of trouble with a pair of infield outs.
The Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland also got off to a good start with three scoreless frames to begin. Adam Eaton doubled in the first inning and Yan Gomes singled in the third. But the Nats could not sustain enough of a rally in either inning to plate any runs.
Mid-fourth, the Nats and the Rockies are scoreless.
Update: The Nats broke through in the fourth. With two outs, Brian Dozier doubled off of Freeland down the left field line. Then Victor Robles' hot-shot grounder got past second baseman Garrett Hampson to score Dozier. Hampson was given a fielding error on the play.
After four innings, the Nats lead the Rockies 1-0.
Update II: Despite 106 pitches thrown, Corbin ends up firing six shutout innings, striking out seven, allowing three hits with three walks. He benifitted from outstanding defense from Juan Soto, Robles and Trea Turner.
Tanner Rainey and Tony Sipp kept the Rockies at bay with a scoreless seventh inning.
After six and half frames, the Nats lead the Rockies 1-0.
Update III: Gomes blasted a Jake McGee pitch over the left-center field wall to boost the Nats' lead to 2-0. His fourth homer of the season came on a 3-2 pitch and provided much needed insurance for the Nats.
After seven innings, the Nats lead the Rockies 2-0.
Update IV: Sean Doolittle pitches a scoreless ninth fo his 23rd save.
Nats 2, Rockies 0.
