Crichton also joining Orioles in Toronto (Drake DFA)

The Orioles apparently are ready to make a series of roster moves in Toronto.

Triple-A Norfolk reliever Stefan Crichton also is joining the team at Rogers Centre, along Tides teammates Alec Asher, who's expected to start Saturday.

No word from the Orioles on the two arrivals, particularly how Crichton fits and who's coming off the 40-man roster to make room for him. He's listed among nine relievers on the lineup card posted by the Blue Jays, and a source confirmed that Crichton is joining the Orioles.

Manager Buck Showalter will be meeting with reporters shortly in Toronto.

The Orioles chose not to protect Crichton in the Rule 5 draft and were glad that teams passed on him. They put Joe Gunkel on the 40-man, designated him for assignment and traded him earlier this week to the Dodgers.

Crichton, 25, has appeared in two games with Norfolk and allowed two earned runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings, with one walk and four strikeouts. He hasn't pitched since Monday.

Showalter kept summoning Crichton from minor league camp in spring training and using him in Grapefruit League games. Crichton responded by not allowing a run or walking a batter in eight innings over eight appearances.

The guy got noticed in a big way.

The Orioles selected Crichton in the 23rd round of the 2013 draft out of Texas Christian University. He's 12-16 with a 3.58 ERA in 111 relief appearances in the minors.

Crichton appeared in 48 games with Double-A Bowie last season, including four starts, and went 2-6 with a 3.73 ERA in 72 1/3 innings.

Update: The Orioles have officially selected Crichton's contract from Norfolk. To create a spot for him on the 25-man roster, reliever Oliver Drake has been designated for assignment. Drake posted an 8.10 ERA in three appearances out of the bullpen.
