Crichton optioned to Norfolk, updating Schoop's hand

The Orioles optioned Stefan Crichton to Triple-A Norfolk this morning to make room for Chris Tillman on the 25-man roster. Tillman came off the disabled list to make today's start against the White Sox.

Second baseman Jonathan Schoop remains out of the lineup with some swelling his right hand.

"A little better," said manager Buck Showalter.

I'm sure you all thought about last night if Schoop couldn't play and someone was hurt in the infield. I probably would have given J.J. (Hardy) yesterday or today off if Jon had been available. So, we've got to make sure our lineup is constructed where we can move some things around.

"Jon wasn't available last night. We've got to find out if he's available in some form today. I'm hoping he's back tomorrow, but he's still got some soreness there. The swelling is managing better."

Schoop was hit by a pitch Friday night, which led to his absence from the lineup the next two days.

"That's the thing we see all the time," Showalter said. "These guys get hit by a pitch and have an initial reaction to it and then just kind of go on with the game. That's one of the things where people get some emotion going or whatever when hit by a pitch because you're that close to a season, a month on the DL. In some cases, careers.

"It reminds me of the courage it takes to do what these guys do in the batter's box every day. Everybody throws 96, 97 (mph). How many times in last night's game if a guy didn't have good reaction times, what would have happened? And try to hit, too."

Edwin Jackson makes his first start today at Triple-A Norfolk, and Showalter said outfielder Michael Bourn isn't far behind him. Bourn is still at extended spring training.

Jackson was considered a bullpen piece, but the Tides need starters with the Orioles constantly raiding their roster.
