Darren O'Day on the bullpen improvement and more

The Orioles' bullpen has gotten on a bit of roll and is putting up numbers that fans have come to expect from the pitchers after a slow start.

Since April 29, the bullpen ranks second in the majors (behind Detroit) with a 1.41 ERA and ranks first in opponent batting average at .161.

Right-hander Darren O'Day got the save Wednesday, getting the last four outs. He has not allowed an earned run over his last 11 appearances and 10 innings and has an 0.69 ERA for the year.

After that slow start, he felt it was just a matter of time before the bullpen pitchers turned that around.

"Yeah, I think so," O'Day said. "We take pride in what we do and we weren't happy with what we were doing at the beginning. We're a confident bunch and we know we are going to be good. We have been here for a while.

"We can still do a better job of controlling damage late in games. We can't let games get away from us. If we're down by two, we have to keep it there and give our offense time to come back. We're improving and we know we are going to get better still."

As for the team, the Orioles enter tonight's series with the Angels at 15-17 and four games behind the first-place Yankees.

"We are not doing some of the little things, the details," O'Day said. "We've had some really good games where we have done the small things that made us successful the past few years. Then we have a game that looks like the 'Bad News Bears.' The game we lost to the Blue Jays was one of those 'Bad News Bears' games, but we responded the next day and came back and won.

"We have put a little run together at this time before and we are looking forward to that."

The Orioles went 4-2 against the Angels last year, going 2-1 both at home and on the road. They are 9-4 in their last 13 games versus the Angels.
