Darren O'Day provides injury update

BOSTON - Though he's eligible to come off the disabled list this weekend, Orioles reliever Darren O'Day hasn't made the necessary strides with his strained right hamstring - so to speak - which would allow him to rejoin the bullpen.

O'Day still hasn't thrown from a mound and still doesn't know when he'll be cleared to do so, severely reducing the odds that he's activated on Sunday.

"Part of my delivery is bending over, stretching the hamstring. Before I get on the mound, I want to make sure it's fully healed so it won't happen again," O'Day said earlier today.

When I talk to these medical professionals, nobody will put a timetable on it because they're good at their jobs, so they know that everybody has different experiences with this. I'm antsy to get back, get going, but it's just a matter of doing it once and doing it right instead of reinjuring it."

O'Day is the clichéd day-to-day while on the disabled list. The leg didn't feel much better this afternoon. Who knows what tomorrow brings?

"It's going more slowly than I had originally thought, but I could come in tomorrow and I could feel great and get going. I don't know," he said.

Manager Buck Showalter noted yesterday that O'Day's recovery was moving along slowly. Little by little, as he put it. He also anticipated that O'Day's eventual rehab assignment should be brief.

"Yeah, I would anticipate so," O'Day said. "I come into spring training and usually my best outing is the first one and the rest of them are pretty mediocre and I have a good one at the end. Then I'm ready to go. Yeah, one, maybe two appearances would be great, but somebody else makes that decision."

Meanwhile, reliever Vance Worley did some throwing before batting practice while on the disabled list with a strained right groin.

Showalter wishes Major League Baseball had a seven-day disabled list, which exists in the minors. Worley figures to be recovered before his 15 days are up, but the Orioles didn't want to be shorthanded in the bullpen for two series.
