Davis breaks tie with Gentile (O's lose 4-3)

BOSTON - If you're keeping count, that's 47 home runs for Orioles first baseman Chris Davis. Davis added to his total tonight by jumping on the first pitch from Boston starter John Lackey in the top of the sixth inning. He drove an 85 mph cutter to center field to increase the Orioles' lead to 3-1. Davis also drove in a run in the first with a double, and the homer upped his RBI total to 120. Miguel Tejada owns the club record with 150. Davis now ranks third on the Orioles' single-season home run list, two behind Frank Robinson and three behind Brady Anderson. He also has 22 homers against the American League East, the most by any player against his division. Evan Longoria has 20. Davis' 42 homers against the AL East over the past two seasons are the most by any player against any division since the start of 2012. Bud Norris tied his season high with four walks tonight and exited with one out in the sixth after striking out Mike Napoli. Francisco Rodriguez entered the game and got a double play on one pitch to Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Norris threw 105 pitches, only 59 for strikes. In his last four starts, Norris has gone five, 5 2/3, 4 2/3 and 5 1/3 innings. The Orioles have won all five of his starts since acquiring him from the Astros, and they continue to lead 3-1 tonight. Update: Darren O'Day inherited two runners from Rodriguez in the seventh, and they both scored on Dustin Pedroia's two-out single to tie the game 3-3. Stephen Drew doubled and Jacoby Ellsbury singled with one out. Ellsbury stole second after O'Day entered the game. Shane Victorino lined out, but Pedroia singled to left. Brian Matusz retired David Ortiz on a fly ball to left. Ortiz is 1-for-18 with 10 strikeouts lifetime against Matusz. Update II: Pinch-hitter Mike Carp looped a single over a retreating Manny Machado into shallow left field with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, enabling Jarrod Saltalamacchia to score and break a 3-3 tie. Koji Uehara took care of business in the top of the ninth, and the Orioles lost to the Red Sox 4-3. Tommy Hunter replaced Brian Matusz with one out and nobody on base in the eighth. He struck out Mike Napoli, but Saltalamacchia doubled, Stephen Drew was walked intentionally and Carp singled past the outstretched glove of Machado. The Orioles had won five consecutive series at Fenway Park, but the best that they can do Thursday night is try to avoid the sweep. The Orioles are 14-24 in one-run games this season.
