Davis homers twice, Schoop homers again as O's take series from Tampa Bay

Right-hander Dylan Bundy got back in the win column and the Orioles offense kept coming this afternoon. Jonathan Schoop hit yet another homer, Chris Davis hit two and Austin Wynns also connected as the Orioles beat Tampa Bay 11-5 at Camden Yards.

The Orioles (32-74) win this series, three victories to one, and have just their second three-game win streak of the season. They won four straight from May 9-12 and this is just the second winning streak of more than two games all season. They concluded a 4-2 homestand with one rainout and are 20-35 at Oriole Park.

With his team up 6-3 in the seventh, Schoop hit a three-run homer to center. It was his 17th. Schoop has hit six home runs his last seven games and seven in his last nine. He also has matched his career high with a 12-game hitting streak.

Davis hit his second homer in the eighth and the two-run shot made it 11-5. He hit his 12th and 13th homers for his first multi-homer game of the year and 20th of his career.

After scoring 26 runs in the previous two games, the Orioles took a 3-0 lead in the first today. Tim Beckham led off with a double and later scored from third when Adam Jones put on a nice takeout slide at second base to break up a double play that would have ended the inning. Not only did that slide allow a run to score, but it allowed Davis to bat. He hit a two-run homer to center for a 3-0 lead. Davis hit No. 12 and got some help on the blast. Center fielder Mallex Smith took a leap at the wall, saw the ball hit in his glove, and kick out and over the fence.

Tampa Bay got three solo homers today, two by C.J. Cron and one by Jake Bauers. Cron's first came leading off the second to cut the O's lead to 3-1. In the home second, Wynns reached on an error and later scored on Jones' single to make it 4-1.

Each team scored once in the fourth. Cron's second homer made it 4-2. It was his 22nd of the year, Cron's second multi-homer game this year and 10th of his career. When Wynns lined a solo homer to left in the home half, the O's lead grew to 5-2 on his second career home run. Jace Peterson's RBI single an inning later made it 6-2 and Bauers' solo homer in the sixth made it a 6-3 lead. Homers by Schoop and Davis extended that and Tampa Bay scored twice in the eighth off Mychal Givens to conclude its scoring.

The Orioles offense has produced 37 runs the last three games, 47 in the last five and 62 runs the last nine games since the All-Star break. Coming into today, in eight games since the break, the O's were batting .298/.361/.507 to rank second in the American League in all categories since the break.

The Orioles had 15 hits for the third straight game. This is also the first time they've scored in double digits for three consecutive games since June 26-29, 2016.

Bundy went seven innings and allowed four hits and three runs with no walks and seven strikeouts. He is 7-9 with an ERA of 4.53 after a 92-pitch outing. Bundy has allowed six homers over his past two starts and that doesn't count Wednesday's rainout, where he gave up three in two innings versus Boston. He has allowed two or more in eight of his 20 starts.

Bundy's outing produced the Orioles' fourth quality start in the past four games. Before this run, they had just one the previous 16 games.

Now the Orioles take Monday off and open a two-game series in the Bronx on Tuesday night versus the Yankees. They are 5-5 against New York this season.
