Davis might be headed to injured list (Davis on IL, O's lose 8-7)

DENVER - The Orioles are prepared to make a roster move today involving first baseman Chris Davis.

Manager Brandon Hyde said Davis has been bothered by hip soreness. Davis was examined last night and unavailable for a 9-6 win over the Rockies, which included Rio Ruiz playing first base in the ninth inning.

Davis wasn't in the dugout or inside the clubhouse after the game.

Hyde finished his session with the media this morning and headed inside to check on Davis before making a decision.

Meanwhile, reliever Evan Phillips was on the field earlier and would be the corresponding roster move for Davis, who's sitting out the entire series.

The Orioles would be down to a three-man bench again today with no designated hitter and could go with only two reserves Monday when they return home to play the Tigers.

Davis is 5-for-41 with 25 strikeouts since May 10. An average that threatened to top .199 for the first time since 2017 is back down to .171 with a .575 OPS.

"CD has been sore for a few days," Hyde said. "His hip's been acting up a little bit, so we're evaluating right now. Had a doctor see him last night and kind of going from there. Possibility of a roster move before the game today."

A prolonged absence likely would force the Orioles to bring up a position player rather than stay with a two-man bench. Triple-A Norfolk outfielder DJ Stewart is a possibility. He doubled and scored in the first inning today in Gwinnett and began the game with a .476 average and 1.453 OPS in May

Reliever Nate Karns is with the club in Denver and continuing his throwing progression while on the 60-day injured list. Outfielder Mark Trumbo is playing the field at extended spring training and close to beginning an injury rehab assignment.

"He hasn't had any setbacks, he's feeling good," Hyde said. "The knee's recovering, so he's going to starting going out pretty soon."

Update: Davis goes on the 10-day IL retroactive to yesterday with left hip inflammation and Phillips is recalled.

Update II: Hanser Alberto sored with one out on the second inning on Austin Wynns' bunt to take a 1-0 lead.

Update III: Errors by Jonathan Villar and Wynns in the fifth enabled the Rockies to tie the game 1-1.

Update IV: The Rockies took a 5-1 lead in the sixth on Nolan Arenado's two-run homer and pitcher German Márquez's two-run triple.

Update V: An RBI single by Villar, Dwight Smith Jr. sacrifice fly and Renato Núñez run-scoring single in the seventh cut the lead to 5-4.

Update VI: Another unearned run for the Rockies in the seventh on Núñez's throwing error.

Update VII: Trey Mancini's two-run triple in the eighth gave the Orioles a 7-6 lead. The inning began with back-to-back doubles by Richie Martin and Keon Broxton.

Update VIII: Mychal Givens walked two batters to force in the tying run in the ninth and Tony Wolters' sacrifice fly gave the Rockies an 8-7 win.
