Davis passes Powell (Tillman goes six innings, O's win 8-5)

Boog Powell held the Orioles record for most RBIs before the All-Star break with 86, set during the 1969 season. He did it in 94 games. Chris Davis tied Powell's record last night and passed him tonight, upping his RBI total to 88. The Orioles are playing their 94th game. Davis drilled an opposite-field two-run homer in the second inning after Adam Jones doubled, tying the game 2-2. Edwin Encarnacion responded with his 24th home run with two outs in the third to give Toronto a 3-2 lead. Davis is in a 3-for-28 slump - except the three hits are home runs. Is it still a slump? He's homered on back-to-back nights, giving him 35 this season. He's now tied with Ken Griffey Jr. for the second-most home runs before the break in American League history, trailing only Reggie Jackson, who hit 37 in 1969. Chris Tillman had allowed two homers in his last five starts over 29 1/3 innings, but he's served up two tonight. J.P. Arencibia had a two-run shot in the second to briefly give Toronto the lead. Tillman hadn't allowed more than one home run in a start since giving up four to the Nationals on May 29. On the plus side, he's struck out Jose Bautista twice tonight. Bautista was 6-for-15 with two home runs against Tillman. Tillman retired the side in order on 12 pitches in the first inning, but he needed 25 to get through the second. He's up to 58 pitches through the third. Update: The ball is flying out of here tonight. Jones hit a three-run homer to left-center field in the bottom of the third inning, the ball almost reaching the visiting bullpen, to give the Orioles a 5-3 lead. Manny Machado and Nick Markakis singled with two outs and Jones delivered his 17th home run of the season. He's also got 64 RBIs. Arencibia singled to right-center field with one out in the fourth, but Jones cut off the ball and threw a perfect strike to second, despite being off-balance, to cut down the Blue Jays catcher. It was Jones' fourth outfield assist this season. Update II: The ball is still flying out of here. J.J. Hardy's three-run homer in the sixth increased the Orioles' lead to 8-3. Hardy has 16 homers and 51 RBIs this season. Adam Jones led off with a single, leaving him a triple short of the cycle. Davis also singled, Matt Wieters popped up and Hardy reached the seats in left. Tillman threw 108 pitches in six innings. He allowed three runs and eight hits, walked one, struck out five and surrendered two home runs. Tommy Hunter was warming in the bullpen, but newest Oriole Jairo Asencio will make his debut in the seventh. Tillman has gone at least six innings in six of his last eight starts. He has a chance to improve to 20-6 since June 25, 2012. Tonight's attendance: 42,660 Update III: Hunter allowed two runs in the ninth, forcing closer Jim Johnson into the game, but the Orioles held on for an 8-5 victory over the Blue Jays. Adam Lind had a two-run double with two outs. Johnson came in to face Colby Rasmus, who was 3-for-4, and retired him on one pitch. Johnson now has 32 saves. Asencio struck out Jose Bautista and Encarnacion, stranding two runners in the seventh. Bautista was 0-for-5 with four strikeouts. Darren O'Day didn't say a word in the bullpen. The Orioles improved to 52-42. They went 3-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranded only one. They were 11-for-69 with RISP over their last 11 games.
