Davis, Reynolds wearing golden sombreros (Davis approaching record)

Orioles third baseman Chris Davis misses that Eastern League pitching. Davis has struck out four times today and is 0-for-8 with six strikeouts since completing his injury rehab assignment at Double-A Bowie and coming off the disabled list yesterday. Davis fanned three times today against A.J. Burnett and took a called third strike from reliever David Robertson. This isn't a recent development for Davis. He's struck out 19 times in his last nine games and 39 at-bats. Meanwhile, the Orioles and Yankees remain tied 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth as rain continues to fall and the price of that drying compound steadily rises. I knew that I should have invested in it. Curtis Granderson doubled off Orioles left-hander Zach Phillips leading off the seventh inning and took third on a sacrifice bunt. But Willie Eyre struck out Russell Martin and retired Nick Swisher on a ground ball to second base. Kevin Gregg is in the game, which is being delayed again while the grounds crew tries to soak up the puddles in the infield. The batter's box washed away a long, long time ago. Update: Mark Reynolds took a called third strike from Rafael Soriano to strand two runners in the top of the ninth. Reynolds has struck out four times and reached on an error. Matt Angle reached on a two-base error by left fielder Brett Gardner. Soriano issued an intentional walk to Nick Markakis with two outs, bringing Reynolds to the plate. Kevin Gregg retired the side in order in the eighth, only the second time he's produced a 1-2-3 inning in his last 10 appearances. And he's back out for the ninth. Update II: Mark Teixeira blooped a single into center field leading off the ninth. Clay Rapada replaced Gregg and struck out Robinson Cano and retired Curtis Granderson on a pop up in foul territory. Pedro Strop replaced Rapada and retired Eduardo Nunez on a ground ball to short. It's time for free baseball in the Bronx. The wetter the better. Cano was hitting .330 against left-handed pitching, but manager Buck Showalter called upon Rapada, his lefty specialist. Rapada got a called third strike with the count full. Update III: Chris Davis struck out again, raising today's total to five and leaving him one short of the single-game franchise record set by Sam Horn on July 17, 1991. I wouldn't expect a ceremony tomorrow at Camden Yards.
