Delmarva game blog: Harvey against Giolito at Perdue Stadium (Shorebirds win in 15 innings)
SALISBURY, Md. - First pitch of today's doubleheader is minutes away as Single-A Delmarva right-hander Hunter Harvey pitches against Hagerstown right-hander Lucas Giolito in a matchup of two of the game's top young pitching prospects.
Check back on this very blog and I'll provide a few updates during Game 1 of the doubleheader.
The Shorebirds are 5-7 to start the year. Delmarva beat Hagerstown 9-2 Monday to snap a three-game losing streak before last night's game was rained out.
Delmarva already has 10 outfield assists to lead the South Atlantic League. Greg Lorenzo is the league leader with five and Mike Yastrzemski has four.
Yastrzemski is the Shorebirds' leader in runs (9), triples (2) and is tied for the lead in RBIs (8). Most of the Shorebirds regulars have had modest starts at-bat. Outfielder Josh Hart has gone 5-for-8 with a double and two RBIs over his last two games to raise his average to .265.
Shorebirds starters have just four quality starts with an ERA of 5.86 and Delmarva is last in the league right now with a team ERA of 5.17.

Two scoreless for Harvey and Giolito: Harvey has pitched two scoreless innings to start his day. Harvey pitched a 1-2-3 top of the first on just 10 pitches. He got a pair of groundouts and then struck out No. 3 batter John Wooten with a curveball to end the frame.
He retired the side in order in the second on two groundouts and a shallow fly ball, this time on just 12 pitches. Harvey's fastball has been between 91 and 94 here on the stadium radar gun.
Giolito has matched him with two scoreless. He ended the first with a strikeout of Mancini on a 95 mph fastball. He then struck out the side in the second. Pretty impressive start for both.
Harvey escapes big jam in fourth: After he gave up a single but fanned two batters to pitch a shutout top of the third, Harvey got a big test in the top of the fourth.
He hit the first two batters. He then fanned No. 3 hitter John Wooten and appeared to strike out No. 4 batter Spencer Kieboom on a 3-2 pitch, but a balk was called, advancing the runners to second and third. But, Harvey then got Kieboom to pop out and struck out Drew Ward to end the threat. Quite a job of navigating his way through the rally.
Harvey needed 25 pitches to get through the fourth and is at 61 for the game.
Meanwhile, Delmarva got its first hit in the fourth off Giolito. It was a one-out single to right by Trey Mancini, but Giolito put up another zero of his own.
Each pitcher has a one-hitter going with five strikeouts through the fourth.
Orioles director of pitching development Rick Peterson is here watching Harvey pitch. O's minor league infield coordinator Dave Anderson is here and so is minor league instructor B.J. Surhoff.
Still zeroes: This game went to the last of the sixth tied at 0-0. Harvey gave up a one-out walk, but catcher Chance Sisco recorded a caught stealing in the fifth.
Then, Harvey pitched a dominant top of the sixth, getting two strikeouts, his sixth and seventh of the game. He mixed in a couple of big sweeping curveballs in that frame, and is at 90 pitches.
Hagerstown went to the bullpen in the sixth, and Giolito is out after five innings. He needed just 66 pitches to record the 15 outs. He gave up two hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Since minor league doubleheaders are seven innings each game, the last scheduled inning will be the seventh.
