Desmond's homer gives Nats quick lead (Harper homer wins it 5-3 in 13)

The rubber match between the Nationals and Mets features a pair of right-handers who have been pitching well. Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom has won five straight games while Nationals right-hander Jordan Zimmermann is coming off a dominant performance. Zimmermann went seven innings on August 2 in an 11-0 win over the Phillies. He struck out eight, walked none, allowed only five hits and no runs for his first win since June 30. In the bottom of the second, Adam LaRoche doubled to lead off the inning. Ian Desmond then crushed a 3-2 offering from deGrom over the left-center field wall to give the Nats a 2-0 lead. The Nats lead 2-0 at the end of two innings. Update: In the top of the third, deGrom singled to lead off the inning. He then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and one out later scored on a Daniel Murphy double. Zimmermann was able to limit the Mets' damage to just one run as David Wright flew out to end the inning. The Nats lead 2-1 as the game moves to the bottom of the third. Update II: LaRoche just keeps on hitting. In the bottom of the fourth, with one out, LaRoche hit his second of the game. Desmond then drove him in with an RBI single to extend the Nats' lead to 3-1. Meanwhile, Zimmermann has retired eight batters in a row at one point. The Nats lead 3-1 at the end of four innings. Update III: The Mets scored two times in the seventh to tie the game at 3-3. A run scored on a sac fly by Eric Young, Jr., and the other on a run-scoring single from Curtis Granderson, both off pitches from Drew Storen, but credited to Zimmermann. Zimmermann left after 6 1/3 innings. He allowed seven hits, three earned runs, no walks and struck out five batters. Zimmermann threw 91 pitches, 67 for strikes. Update IV: With one out in the bottom of the ninth and Jeurys Familia on in relief, Asdrubal Cabrera lead down a bunt for a base hit. He moved to second on a wild pitch. Pinch-hitter Steven Souza, Jr., struck out looking. Span, facing Dana Eveland, grounded out to second on a fielder's choice. Game tied 3-3 into extra innings. The Mets are 6-7, the Nationals 3-8 in extra inning games this season. 3-3 in the 10th. Update V: In the 12th against Jenrry Mejia, Span collected his fourth hit of the game and later Jayson Werth singled him to third. LaRoche struck for the third straight at-bat to end the threat. Heading to the 13th, tied at 3-3. Update VI: Harper crushed a two-run homer in the 13th to lift the Nationals to a 5-3 win. The win was the first in nine extra-inning games at home for the Nationals. It was Harper's second walk-off homer of his career.
