Detroit homers twice in the eighth to end O's win steak

The Orioles entered today's eighth inning with a record of 17-1 when leading after seven innings. But they could not add to that or extend their seven-game win streak.

Detroit's J.D. Martinez and Miguel Cabrera hit back-to-back solo homers off Darren O'Day in the eighth as Detroit rallied for a 6-5 win over the Orioles this afternoon. Looking for their first eight-game win streak since April 22-May 1, 2005, the Orioles were instead dealt one tough loss.

They fall to 23-13 overall and to 16-6 at home. They were denied their first four-game home sweep of the Tigers since April 17-20, 1992.

O'Day had allowed just one homer this year against 59 batters, but Martinez's blast tied the game 5-5 and Cabrera's sixth homer made it a 6-5 Detroit lead. Detroit hit back-to-back homers for the third time.

Kevin Gausman began this start with an ERA of 2.16, but struggled throughout his five-inning outing. He gave up a career-high 10 hits over five innings and four runs. But he was in line for the win until the top of the eighth.

Manny Machado rounds bases white.jpgManny Machado hit another big homer for the Orioles in the last of the fifth. They started the inning down 4-3 and Caleb Joseph reached on an error. Machado hit a 393-foot homer to right-center on a 2-2 fastball from Tigers starter Michael Fulmer that gave the Orioles a 5-4 lead. It was his 11th of the year and Machado's eighth at Camden Yards in 22 home games.

Called on at the start of the sixth, Mychal Givens pitched two scoreless innings. He struck out James McCann with runners on second and third and two outs in the seventh to hold the lead.

After not scoring in the first five innings of each game in this series, the Orioles scored three times in the last of the first today off Fulmer.

Joey Rickard led off with a single and scored on Adam Jones' double to left for the 1-0 lead. It was the sixth straight game Jones drove in a run and gave him 12 hits over his last 22 at-bats. Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo then both walked to load the bases for Jonathan Schoop, who singled to left on a first-pitch fastball to score two runs and it was 3-1. Schoop has seven RBIs in the last two games.

Detroit had taken the lead in the first when Ian Kinsler doubled and scored on Cabrera's single. Steven Moya's RBI triple in the second made it 3-2 and Detroit tied it 3-3 in the fourth. Kinsler led off that inning with a homer to left on the first pitch. It was his seventh homer.

Detroit stranded the base loaded in the second and third against Gausman. Over the first three innings, the Tigers left seven runners on base, going 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position. But the Tigers would take a 4-3 lead on Gausman in the fifth when Justin Upton doubled and scored on James McCann's single to left.

The Orioles are off on Monday before Seattle comes to Camden Yards for a series on Tuesday night.
