Guthrie held the Yankees to one run, a Mark Teixeira homer, over seven innings. He allowed four hits, walked three and struck out five. He threw 114 pitches, 69 for strikes.
Timing is everything.
Guthrie didn't find an easy mark. Before tonight, he was 3-9 with a 5.46 ERA in 16 career games against the Yankees.
The Tigers and Indians remain serious suitors for Guthrie. The Orioles need a major league-ready arm. They'd love a first base prospect.
They won't dump Guthrie and be left with another gaping hole in their rotation, but the offers might have sweetened tonight.
Koji Uehara didn't hurt his value, either. He allowed one hit and struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning. He threw 15 strikes among his 20 pitches, and his ERA is down to 1.72.
Derrek Lee, also a trade chip, is 2-for-3 with his 12th home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
It's like a showcase showdown at Yankee Stadium.
