CLEVELAND - Care to take a stab at predicting the Orioles lineup this afternoon?
Adam Jones could remain atop the order after collecting two hits last night. The outfield corners again could be handled by Hyun Soo Kim and Nolan Reimold. Kim has made three consecutive starts.
Manager Buck Showalter is looking for any combination that works at the plate and still works in the field.
Kim was 5-for-7 in his last two games before going 0-for-3 last night. He was hit by a pitch in the first inning, flied to deep left-center field in the second, grounded sharply to second base in the fourth and struck out looking in the seventh.
The fly ball that Rajai Davis ran down in the second inning might be the hardest hit from Kim since he came to the U.S., though he took it to the opposite field.
Is he a vastly different hitter with a vastly different approach since his early days in camp?
"Not really," Showalter said. "There's just still a lot of unknown. Nobody's that smart to know exactly what a guy is or isn't going to be coming from that competition level. Not to downplay it.
"I think he's in good shape. If you keep in mind where he came from, their spring training is almost three months. I think he's running better, he's defending better, he's in a good frame of mind. I think it's been good for him to sit and watch the games to some extent. I was kidding him (Thursday). I said, 'You're going to need some time off playing two days in a row.'
"He's a good teammate. He likes winning, he's fit in well and I'm glad he's having some success. And there's no reason why he and Nolan, for instance, shouldn't be able to ride it until they show us something different. They've been doing their part and they deserve an opportunity."
Reimold struck out and grounded into a double play in his first two at-bats last night, but he lined a single into left field in the fifth inning and flied to deep center field in the seventh.
Jones figures to stay in the leadoff spot today. Showalter was leaning in that direction.
Indians starter Danny Salazar is 4-3 with a 2.32 ERA in nine starts. He's allowed 14 runs and 35 hits in 54 1/3 inning. He's averaging 11.1 strikeouts per nine innings and has surrendered only three home runs.
Salazar has allowed two earned runs or fewer in seven of his nine starts. Left-handers are batting .158 against him and right-handers are batting .204.
The sample size against the Orioles is small. He's 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in two career starts, with three runs and 10 hits allowed over 12 innings. He's walked two and struck out 14.
Manny Machado is 2-for-3 with a home run and Pedro Alvarez is 1-for-2 with a home run.
Machado has a six-game hitting streak against the Indians, going 12-for-26, and has hit safely in 14 of 16 career games.
Ubaldo Jimenez is in dire need of a decent outing. As I've pointed out, he's allowed 17 runs (16 earned) and 22 hits over 15 innings in his last three starts. He's also walked 11 batters.
For the month of May, Jimenez is 1-3 with a 7.81 ERA and 1.952 WHIP in five starts over 27 2/3 innings. He's walked 16 and struck out 18.
Jimenez is 0-3 with a 7.02 ERA in three road starts this season. He's 1-2 with a 5.06 ERA in four career starts against the Indians and owns a 3.67 ERA in 36 starts at Progressive Field.
Juan Uribe is 5-for-15 with two doubles and Mike Napoli is 4-for-13 with a double and two home runs.
