Doug Fister is off the board

So much for the Orioles signing Doug Fister to fill out their rotation.

The Astros have agreed to terms with Fister on a one-year deal. The club confirmed it in a tweet this morning.

SB Nation's Chris Cotillo reports that Fister will receive a guaranteed $7 million, and performance bonuses can push the total value to $12 million.

The Orioles were interested in Fister, but they also had concerns about his health. He reportedly sought a two-year deal for around $22 million and the Orioles weren't offering more than one year.

Doug Fister gray 33 sidebar.jpgFister, 31, lost his spot in the Nationals rotation last summer while going 5-7 with a 4.19 ERA and 1.398 WHIP in 25 games (15 starts). However, he was 16-6 with a 2.41 ERA and 1.079 WHIP in 25 starts the previous season and finished eighth in Cy Young voting in the National League.

Fister has registered a 3.42 ERA in seven major league seasons. He reportedly has passed a physical, eliminating concerns about the condition of his right arm.

The Orioles still haven't replaced left-hander Wei-Yin Chen, who signed a five-year deal with the Marlins. They're reluctant to part with their first-round pick, currently the 14th overall, which eliminates Yovani Gallardo from consideration.

Fister was affordable and didn't come attached to draft pick compensation. He made the most sense for the Orioles, whose in-house candidates include Vance Worley, Tyler Wilson and Mike Wright.

The rotation's ERA increased from 3.61 in 2014 to 4.53 last season and the Orioles stated an upgrade as its primary task after finishing .500 and missing the playoffs. However, the search continues for Chen's replacement.
