It was a day where right-hander Dylan Bundy got back on track. And, after scoring just three runs last night in the second of three games against the Tampa Bay Rays, so did the Orioles offense. Big time.
That was an impressive combination on Mother's Day at the Yard that led the Orioles to a 17-1 romp over the Rays in front of a crowd of 25,257. They win three of four in this series and have back-to-back series wins for the first time in 2018.
Bundy had pitched to a 19.00 ERA, allowing nine homers in nine innings his past three starts. Today he pitched seven scoreless, allowing only two doubles. He walked four and fanned seven over 100 pitches.
Bundy is 2-5 with a 4.53 ERA. He recorded his second scoreless start of 2018 after also pitching seven scoreless on opening day.
Before today, Tampa Bay left-hander Blake Snell had allowed just three homers over his past six starts covering 39 2/3 innings, but then he gave up three in the second inning.
That inning the O's got solo homers from Danny Valencia (No. 5), Joey Rickard (No. 1) and Trey Mancini (No. 6). Valencia and Rickard went back-to-back and Mancini's homer to right made it 3-0. Manny Machado led off the fourth with a single and later scored on an error for a 4-0 advantage.
Then the Orioles biggest inning of the year blew the game open. They scored seven runs on six hits in the fourth for an 11-0 lead.
Machado doubled in one, Jonathan Schoop singled in two and Valencia added an RBI single to make it 8-0. Then Rickard blasted his second homer and the three-run shot off Andrew Kittredge made it 11-0 on his first career multi-homer game.
Snell had entered with a record of 4-2 and a 2.40 ERA that ranked seventh-best in the American League. Over his past six starts he had a 1.82 ERA. Two of his streaks ended today - one where he allowed two runs or less six straight starts. And another where Snell had allowed five hits or less for 12 consecutive starts. He was charged with five runs and six hits over 3 1/3 innings. Kittredge faced seven batters and didn't get one out. He allowed six runs and six hits.
The Orioles were not done scoring at 11-0 and added six more runs in the seventh to lead 17-0. Rickard finished with five RBIs, Valencia had four RBIs to go along with four hits tying his career high and Mancini, Machado, Schoop and Craig Gentry knocked in two runs each.
The Orioles are 5-2 on this homestand, 10-12 at home and 13-28 overall. They've scored 58 runs and hit 19 homers during the homestand. Today they produced season-highs in runs and hits, topping the 11 runs against Kanas City on Thursday. After Monday's off day the homestand continues Tuesday night against the Philadelphia Phillies.
