Dylan Bundy on offseason workouts, goals for improving and more

Even after a season where he pitched at three minor league levels, was named the Orioles' minor league Pitcher of the Year and made it to the majors before his 20th birthday, Dylan Bundy realizes he is still a work in progress. "My offspeed pitches can get better, the consistency of them. Fastball command is a huge thing. You saw in the big leagues I was a little wild at times, but it's all about controlling the nerves and locating pitches," he said in the O's clubhouse Friday. Bundy is in Baltimore to take part in the club's mini-camp this week and appear at FanFest tomorrow. What was the focus of his offseason workouts? "Getting stronger," he said. "That is pretty much the whole point in the offseason for me is just getting stronger and back to where I am at the beginning of the year and try to maintain throughout the season. I've learned it's a long season and it's hard to maintain the whole time. Maybe I'll do a little bit better job this season." Bundy pitched 111 1/3 innings last season counting the minors, one Double-A Bowie playoff start and 1 2/3 innings with the Orioles. He admits to late-season fatigue and added he is not sure what innings limit the Orioles have in mind for him this season. "I wouldn't say I was worn out, but of course I got a little fatigued at the end of the year. I think everybody saw that. Obviously, it will be more than 120 but I don't know the exact number. I really don't care what the number is as long as I go out there and compete and get the work I need in to have a long career," he said. Bundy made his major league debut on Sept. 23 at Boston. In making his O's debut at 19 years, 313 days old, he was the first Oriole to debut before turning 20 since right-hander Mike Adamson on July 1, 1967. It sure looks like Bundy could join the O's rotation at some point during the coming season. The Orioles have said they are open to that. To no one's surprise, Bundy would like to make that happen by opening day. "I think that is everybody's goal that goes to big league camp, to break with the team. The ultimate goal is to be in the big leagues and that's my dream. I will work really hard to get there," he said.
