Dylan Bundy on returning to form, plus other clubhouse quotes

On a day that the Orioles had 19 hits, including four homers, and beat Tampa Bay 17-1, the biggest development was right-hander Dylan Bundy returning to his previous form.

After pitching to a 1.42 ERA through five starts, Bundy had allowed 22 runs and 23 hits with nine homers over his last three starts and nine innings.

On Tuesday night he became the first pitcher to allow four homers and not get one out. But it was much different today as Bundy gave up just two hits - a pair doubles - while pitching seven scoreless.

He was locked back in again.

"Just trying to reach more towards the plate and get finish on all my pitchers really, and getting that little bit of extension I need to get to put the life on my pitches that they need."

Bundy threw 100 pitches and averaged 91.7 mph on his fastball which topped at 94 mph. He improved to 2-5 with a 4.53 ERA and recorded his fifth quality start.

"It's fun to help the bullpen out when you can and go deep in the game," he said. "Any time you can help the bullpen rest your guys that you need to, especially going into the off day, is huge."

So is having an 11-0 lead after the fourth inning.

"Great confidence, especially when they put up four or five runs early on the board," Bundy said of the hitters. "You go out there and really do your thing and attack those hitters. You really just go at them and watch the show."

The Orioles produced season highs in runs and hits. This was their most runs since they got 18 on Aug. 16, 2015 versus Oakland. The 19 hits was their most since getting 21 last Aug. 25 at Boston. The Orioles went 9-for-17 with runners in scoring position and had eight extra-base hits.

"It was a good win for the boys," said Danny Valencia, who hit a solo homer and had four hits and four RBIs. "It's very meaningful also on Mother's Day. I'm sure all the mothers watched. I'm happy I had a good game because I know she was definitely watching."

Valencia tied his career high for hits and since 2017 is batting .515 (17-for-33) versus Tampa Bay pitchers with three homers and 12 RBIs in nine games.

Recalled before today's game, outfielder Joey Rickard hit a solo homer in the second a three-run homer in the fourth that made the lead 11-0. It was his first career multi-homer game. He drove in a career-best five runs.

"It was definitely a good team win for us," Rickard said. "Dylan went right after guys and kind of helped the defense off the field and the offense took it from there. It was a great feeling to contribute in that way. I just have to go out there and improve everyday."

A Rule 5 pick of the Orioles from Tampa Bay in December of 2015, today Rickard hit two homers off a former teammate in lefty Blake Snell.

"He was my roomate for a few years in Tampa, same with Johnny Field," Rickard added. "There are very familiar faces over there. Good guys, good friends, but different teams. I just have to go out there and play hard."

The Orioles (13-28) had six players today drive in two or more runs as Rickard had five, Valencia four and Trey Mancini, Manny Machado, Jonathan Schoop and Craig Gentry had two each.

Winners of two straight series for the first time all year, the Orioles are now 5-2 on this homestand. After Monday's off day, the stand concludes with a two-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
