Orioles top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy has been placed on the disabled list with Single-A Frederick due to a right latissimus strain. It happened while Bundy was running in the outfield following his most recent start.
Bundy saw Orioles doctors today in Baltimore.
"We did an MRI and it confirmed the muscle strain," Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said.
With the minor league regular season set to end Sept. 1, this could make it hard for Bundy to pitch again during this season.
"I don't know the answer to that yet," Duquette said. "This strain should take a short period of time to heal. He didn't do it throwing, he did it running. We'll have to see. But we want him to resolve this issue before deciding what we are going to do next."
Bundy is expected to be sent to the Orioles facility in Sarasota, Fla. to rehab the injury.
Bundy has been coming back from right elbow ligament reconstructive surgery, commonly known as Tommy John surgery. That surgery took place on June 27, 2013 but this injury is unrelated.
Bundy made nine starts this year between short-season, Single-A Aberdeen and Single-A Frederick. He went 1-3 with a 3.27 ERA. In 41 1/3 innings he gave up 38 hits and 15 runs with 16 walks and 37 strikeouts.
In six starts with Frederick, the 21-year-old right-hander was 1-2 with a 4.78 ERA. In 26 1/3 innings he gave up 28 hits with 13 walks and 15 strikeouts.
In his last start on Aug. 5 he pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings on five hits against Carolina in one of his best outings of the summer. He didn't walk a batter and fanned seven.
Bundy has been ranked as the Orioles' No. 1 prospect the last two years by Baseball America. Before the 2014 season started he was ranked as the No. 15 prospect in the sport by Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus and was No. 20 by MLB.com and No. 31 by ESPN and that was with him coming off the surgery.
Considered among the most advanced prep pitchers in years, Bundy went fourth overall in a deep 2011 draft and signed a $6.225 million major league contract that included a $4 million bonus.
