Early notes before tonight's game

Hunter Harvey pitched two innings today in extended spring training in Sarasota and didn't report any discomfort in his groin.

Harvey is expected to pitch again in extended before the Orioles assign him to an affiliate.

Harvey, the 22nd-overall pick in the 2013 draft, hasn't pitched since July 2014 due to a strained right flexor mass and a fractured fibula. Orioles manager Buck Showalter would like to get Harvey up to 100 innings this summer.

Jimmy Paredes is 1-for-7 in two games on his injury rehab assignment at Double-A Bowie. He's played one game at third base and served as the designated hitter, but the Orioles also want him to get plenty of reps in the outfield.

The Baysox are off tonight, so Paredes has joined Single-A Frederick for one game.

Yovani Gallardo hasn't been cleared to pick up a ball and it's too early to pick an exact date, but his right shoulder is pain-free and he's performing cuff exercises.

Gallardo is on the disabled list with tendinitis in his rotator cuff.

"We'll go as fast as we can, but as slow as we need to," Showalter said.

Mark Trumbo, serving as the designated hitter again tonight against White Sox left-hander John Danks, could make a start at first base in this series. It's under consideration.

The Orioles remain intrigued by the idea of having Joey Rickard attempt to switch-hit in the fall instructional league. Also under consideration.

Rickard is ambidextrous. He can throw left- and right-handed and slide on both legs.

Showalter said if you pick out 100 position players, "you may find two who can slide on both legs."

Triple-A Norfolk remains short one starter and Joe Gunkel may move up from Bowie. There are rumblings that the Orioles signed a pitcher off waivers who could fill the spot.

The White Sox placed closer David Robertson on bereavement leave. He was 8-for-9 in save opportunities and posted a 0.87 ERA.

The Orioles will hold a moment of silence tonight for Joe Durham, the second African-American to play for the team and the first to hit a home run in 1954.

Durham, a regular presence at Camden Yards before he became ill, passed away today at age 84.
