Errorless streak ends, Reynolds' hot streak continues (we're tied)

BOSTON - Third baseman Manny Machado let Cody Ross' ground ball scoot through his legs for an error with one out in the bottom of the third inning. The miscue ended the Orioles' errorless streak at 11 games and 114 innings. Machado committed the last one, too, with an errant throw after fielding Derek Jeter's slow roller on Sept. 9. The last non-Machado error was committed by center fielder Adam Jones on Sept. 5 in Toronto. The Orioles have made four errors this month and 100 for the season. The Rockies lead the majors with 119. Mark Reynolds gave the Orioles a 3-1 lead with his 22nd home run leading off the top of the fourth inning. In 11 games against Boston this year, Reynolds is 16-for-36 with six home runs and 16 RBIs. The lead didn't last long. Danny Valencia hit his first home run for the Red Sox, a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth that cleared the Green Monster in left field. Valencia is 23rd Red Sox player to homer this year, two shy of the all-time franchise mark. Only the 2009 (24) and 1996 (2003) clubs had more. In his first Orioles start, Randy Wolf gave up two runs and six hits in four innings at Oakland. Today, he's allowed three runs and seven hits in four innings, with two walks, two strikeouts and one home run. He's thrown 73 pitches, 42 for strikes. Jake Arrieta began to warm up in the fourth. Not Dylan Bundy. Jake Arrieta. Update: Sixteen of Reynolds' 22 home runs have come against the American League East. Before today, he was hitting 287/.397/.614 (49-for 171) with 11 doubles and 39 RBIs in 49 division games. Matt Wieters is 3-for-3 today. He has 10 hits in his last 22 at-bats over four games, and he's batting .365 (23-for-63) with five doubles, five homers and 18 RBIs in September. Wolf retired the side in order in the fifth, leaving his pitch count at 88 (49 strikes). Arrieta was warming again. Update II: Maine native Ryan Flaherty is having quite a day. Inserted into the lineup for Andino, Flaherty has walked, doubled and hit a two-run, tie-breaking triple in the top of the sixth inning off former Orioles left-hander Rich Hill. Hill replaced Cook and threw one pitch to Flaherty, which he drove into right-hander field. Flaherty had two at-bats since Aug. 25 before today. Arrieta has replaced Wolf, who allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings, with two walks, two strikeouts and one home run. Update III: Adam Jones hit his 31st home run leading off the top of the seventh, increasing the Orioles' lead to 6-3. The Orioles are 21-8 when Jones homers. The Red Sox fought back against Arrieta in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs and scoring on Ross' grounder to second and Lavarnway's grounder in the hole between short and third. J.J. Hardy made a sensational diving stop and throw to second for the force. Hardy deserves a Gold Glove, just as he did last season. The first run scored after a bizarre play that loaded the bases. Flaherty collided with Hardy on Pedroia's bouncer up the middle, both men trying to field the ball and step on second for the force. The out wasn't recorded, and Ross followed with a grounder to Flaherty, who tagged Pedroia as the run scored. Pedro Strop is warming with the Orioles protecting a 6-5 lead in the eighth. Update IV: Strop retired the first two batters on seven pitches, all strikes, but back-to-back doubles off the Green Monster by Daniel Nava and Scott Podsednik tied the game. Strop had a 7.36 ERA in his last 15 appearances covering 11 innings. Brian Matusz was ready in the bullpen, but Showalter let Strop pitch to the left-handed-hitting Podsednik.
