DUNEDIN, Fla. - Left-hander Dana Eveland, trying to find a spot on the Orioles' 12-man pitching staff, allowed three runs and six hits in four innings today against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Eveland threw 51 pitches, 34 strikes, and left with the Orioles trailing 3-2. Alfredo Simon has taken his place.
Eveland's pitch count stood at 41 after three innings and the bullpen was busy, but he came back out for the fourth and retired the side in order, striking out Colby Rasmus.
Three of the six hits off Eveland were doubles. Eric Thames drove in two runs with two outs in the third after singles by Yunel Escobar and Edwin Encarnacion.
The Jays' first run scored on Rasmus' grounder in the second inning after Brett Lawrie singled and J.P. Arencibia doubled.
The Orioles scored twice in the top of the third to take a brief 2-1 lead. Jonathan Schoop was hit behind the left shoulder by a Ryan Tepera pitch, Jason Esposito singled and moved up on an error, and Rule 5 pick Ryan Flaherty produced a two-run single.
Flaherty has 10 RBIs, second on the team to Adam Jones (11).
Shortstop Manny Machado has reached twice on an error and single.
Jai Miller, who was sidelined with tendinitis in his right knee, is 0-for-2 with a strikeout. He's fanned 18 times in 36 at-bats.
Update: Alfredo Simon allowed three runs in the bottom of the fifth. He gave up two hits, walked a batter and threw a wild pitch.
It didn't get any better for him in the sixth. He surrendered two doubles and a single to the first three batters he faced, and the Blue Jays tacked on three more runs to lead, 9-2.
Simon has allowed six runs and six hits in two innings.
Simon hadn't pitched since injuring his groin during a March 18 start against the Yankees in Sarasota.
