Eveland outrighted again (updated)

Left-hander Dana Eveland has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk for the second time this year. Eveland was designated for assignment on Saturday to make room for reliever Miguel Socolovich on the 25- and 40-man rosters. He went through the same process on March 29 after the Orioles claimed infielder Zelous Wheeler off waivers from the Brewers. Coincidentally, Wheeler moved up today from Double-A Bowie to Norfolk. Eveland, acquired from the Dodgers during the winter meetings, is 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA in 14 games, including two starts. He's allowed 32 hits, walked 13 and struck out 18 in 32 1/3 innings. Because he's been outrighted previously, Eveland could have refused the assignment and become a free agent. However, he would have forfeited his salary, which didn't bring much appeal. With left-hander Zach Britton being recalled by the Orioles tomorrow and Tommmy Hunter possibly being recalled on Wednesday, Eveland could return to Norfolk's rotation after going 3-2 with a 2.21 ERA in six starts with the Tides this year. If there's one benefit to Eveland being designated again, he's gotten the chance to fly home to California and spend a few more days with his new baby. The Orioles are still waiting to find out whether catcher Ronny Paulino has accepted his outright assignment or chosen to become a free agent. They placed him on waivers during the All-Star break. Paulino became expendable over the weekend after catcher Taylor Teagarden was activated from the 60-day disabled list. Also, the Orioles officially recalled Chris Tillman from Bowie today. He's starting tonight in Minnesota. They optioned pitcher Steve Johnson to Norfolk following yesterday's game to create a roster spot for Tillman. And finally, Single-A Frederick infielder Ty Kelly was named the Carolina League Player of the Week after going 7-for-15 with three home runs, six RBIs and six walks in five games. Update: Kelly was promoted to Bowie today.
