Few runs, but plenty of notes from the O's 3-1 loss to the Mets

Here are some notes from the O's latest loss, 3-1 to the New York Mets on Saturday night. Wins and losses: The Orioles fall to 17-45 on the season, 2-6 on this homestand and 11-20 at home. They have lost the series with the Mets taking the first two games. The Orioles are just 2-17-2 in series on the year. The Orioles, after going 11-7 last year vs. the National League, are now just 1-4 in Interleague games and 9-15 all time vs. the Mets. The Orioles have lost four of their last five overall and 16 of their past 19 games. They are just 5-21 over the last 26 games and they are 2-6 since Juan Samuel became interim manager. The O's are 0-9-1 in their last ten series. They just can't score: The Orioles have outhit the Mets 18-15 in this series, but have scored just two runs. They have left 16 on base in the two games and are just 4 for 27 (.148) batting with runners in scoring position in this series. The Orioles have scored one or fewer runs in 20 games on the year and three runs or fewer 39 times, going 2-37 in those contests. They have scored just 29 runs the last 14 games and only 35 runs the last 16 contests. Matusz deserved better: The Orioles have now scored just 11 runs when Brian Matusz has been in the game over his last nine starts. They have scored a total of 41 runs in his 13 starts on the season. Matusz, who gave up six runs or more three times recently over a four-start stretch, has now pitched to an ERA of 2.66 over his last three starts (6 ER over 20 1/3 IP). Those three starts have come vs. Boston, the Yankees and the Mets. Matusz, who is 2-7, 4.92 on the year, has thrown 108, 117 and 96 pitches over his last three starts. Matusz is 0-7 with three no decisions over his past ten starts since his last win on April 18 at Oakland. Jake Arrieta's win over the Yankees on Thursday is the only win by an Orioles starter over the last 16 games since Jeremy Guthrie beat Oakland May 25. The Mets improved to 10-18 on the road on the season and tonight clinched their first road series win of the year. They were 0-7-2 in nine road series, their longest stretch without winning a road series since 1983. The Mets posted back-to-back road wins for the first time since last July 25 and 26 at Houston. They went 56 road games without back-to-back wins, their third longest streak in team history. The Orioles are now 1-4 on the season and 102-132 all-time in interleague play. The Mets are 4-1 and 109-107. Nick Markakis went 2 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI on the night. He is 10 for 25 during a six-game hitting streak with five doubles and 4 RBI. He has four multi-hit games in that stretch. Adam Jones went 1 for 3 to extend his batting streak to seven games. He is 8 for 26 (.308) with a homer and 5 RBI in the streak. The Orioles did not homer in the game. They have now hit just two homers over their last eight games and just five over the last 15 contests. Ty Wigginton has gone 18 games without a homer and Miguel Tejada has not homered over his last 159 at bats, the second longest stretch of his career. He went 173 at bats without a longball from September 11, 2008-May 6, 2009. The Mets are now a season-high six games over .500 at 34-28. The Mets starters are on an amazing roll. They are 13-3, 2.36 over their last 24 games. On Sunday afternoon at 1:35, Kevin Millwood (0-7, 4.64) faces right-hander Mike Pelfrey (8-1, 2.23) Millwood is 0-2, 4.14 in six home starts and is 7-5, 3.29 in 20 career starts vs. New York. Pelfrey has faced the O's just once in his career and got the win in Baltimore last June 16th, allowing five hits and two runs (both earned) in 5 2/3 innings. Final Debbie Downer note of the night: The Orioles are 17-45 with 62 games down and 100 to go. They are on a pace to finish with a record of 44-118. The team record for losses is 107 in 1988.
