Flaherty receives PRP injection in shoulder (plus other notes)

Orioles infielder Ryan Flaherty will have a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right shoulder today and head down to Sarasota to rehab.

Flaherty figures to be out at least two weeks. He won't make the 10-day disabled list period.

Flaherty said earlier today that doctors were determining whether the strain was in his rotator cuff or lat.

"There's something going on," he said. "Hopefully, it won't take too long. They don't think it's that bad, but obviously it hasn't gotten better really since spring training. Hopefully, it won't be that long.

The discomfort cropped up early in spring training and has kept coming back.

"It got better for a little while and then just kind of has gone back downhill," he said. "Hopefully, we'll get an idea exactly what it is, whether it's the lat or the rotator cuff and get this thing going."

An MRI taken on Saturday didn't show any structural damage in the shoulder.

Gabriel Ynoa threw a simulated game today at Camden Yards prior to batting practice and is ready to pitch for an affiliate. The Orioles could option him and let him get back in Triple-A Norfolk's rotation.

Manny Machado is in tonight's lineup after X-rays on his left hand yesterday came back clean, but manager Buck Showalter wants to make sure the third baseman gets through batting practice without any discomfort. Otherwise, Machado could be a late scratch.

Showalter said he talked to the people who treated Machado and now will check with the third baseman on the field.

Closer Zach Britton has expanded the distance on his throws down in Sarasota.

Showalter said Britton is right on schedule for his return date, though it hasn't been made public.

Still no word on whether outfielder Michael Bourn exercised the opt-out clause in his contract. The Orioles are checking on it.

Bourn is batting .220 in 11 games with Norfolk. He has three hits in his last two games to raise his average from .188.

The Orioles considered adding a left-handed reliever before deciding on Tyler Wilson. Paul Fry was discussed.
