Former Oriole Delmon Young arrested (and other notes)

Former Orioles outfielder Delmon Young was arrested in Miami last night and charged with battery after he allegedly choked and threatened to kill a valet attendant and used ethnic slurs, according to Andy Slater of 940 AM radio.

Young allegedly grabbed the attendant by the neck at the Viceroy hotel in Miami after being denied access to a club. Police made the arrest at Young's residence.

According to a report, Young answered the door naked from the waist down and was unsteady on his feet. Police charged him with one count of battery. Young bonded out early Monday afternoon.

With the Tigers in 2012, Young was arrested in New York for aggravated harassment as a hate crime for making an anti-Semitic remark. He was suspended by Major League Baseball and ordered to undergo counseling.

Young is currently a free agent. He spent the past two seasons with the Orioles, who released him on July 9.

Young won Game 2 of the American League Division Series in 2014 with a three-run double in the eighth inning off the Tigers' Joakim Soria.

* The list of players reporting to the Orioles' minor league camp will include a familiar name.

It's certainly a familiar last name.

The Orioles signed third baseman Patrick Palmeiro to a minor league contract, according to Baseball America's transactions page. He's the son of former All-Star first baseman Rafael Palmeiro, a member of the exclusive 3,000-hit, 500-home run club.

Patrick Palmeiro turns 26 in March. A former 22nd-round pick of the Pirates in the 2008 draft, he spent last summer with the independent Sugar Land Skeeters and batted .256/.315/.404 with 28 doubles, 13 home runs and 68 RBIs in 128 games.

Palmeiro spent the previous three years in the White Sox organization, never advancing beyond low Single-A and batting .207/.227/.277 in 190 games. He also plays first base and left field.

Father and son played one game together for Sugar Land in September, with the former major leaguer going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Rafael Palmeiro hit 223 of his 569 home runs with the Orioles. He was suspended for 10 games of the 2005 season for violating its Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and dropped off the Hall of Fame ballot in 2014 in his fourth year of eligibility.

* The Orioles also signed outfielder Jimmy Bosco, 24, to a minor league deal.

The Cardinals released the left-handed hitter in December after selecting him in the 13th round of the 2013 draft out of Arkansas.

Bosco is a career .265/.314/.387 hitter in three minor league seasons. He hasn't played above the high Single-A level.

* The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House has named Orioles head groundskeeper Nicole McFadyen the 2016 recipient of the Mary Pickersgill Award for Women's Leadership in Business. McFadyen will accept the award on March 10 in a ceremony at the Flag House on Pratt St.

The award, established in 2012, is given annually "to honor a woman who demonstrates leadership in her community, exemplifies innovation in her chosen field and has the power to inspire others."

McFadyen will begin her 10th season as the Orioles head groundskeeper. McFadyen and the Tigers' Heather Nabozny are the only female head groundskeepers in the majors.
