Play resumed at 10:58 p.m. after a 1 hour, 26 minute rain delay.
Boston reliever Alfredo Aceves might need a few more warmup tosses.
Aceves hit Mark Reynolds in the left ribcage with his first pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning. Chris Davis flied out, and Aceves drilled Nolan Reimold in the left shoulder.
Reimold flipped his bat, walked toward first base and glared at Aceves. He wore an expression that said, "Are you kidding me?"
Aceves isn't throwing at the Orioles with his team clinging to a 3-2 lead and the Rays having fought back to tie the Yankees, 7-7. He's just wild.
I wonder if Pedro Strop will have the same issues when he enters the game in the top of the eighth.
Update: The Red Sox almost increased their lead to 4-2 in the eighth, but Marco Scutaro was thrown out at the plate on Carl Crawford's double.
Scutaro held up between second and third, thinking Nolan Reimold might make the diving catch. Adam Jones retrieved the ball and threw to shortstop J.J. Hardy, who fired home to get Scutaro. And as usual, catcher Matt Wieters made a tremendous tag.
Wieters absolutely deserves the Gold Glove this year.
Jones has five career two-assist games.
Update II: Nick Markakis left the game in the top of the ninth with a "pelvis contusion." Reimold moved to right field and Matt Angle entered the game in left.
Markakis should be fine once position players report to Sarasota.
Update III: Chris Davis doubled off Jonathan Papelbon with two outs in the ninth, and pinch-runner Kyle Hudson scored on Nolan Reimold's ground-rule double. Reimold lined a 2-2 pitch into right-center field while the Orioles stood on the top step of the dugout. It looked like Game 7.
Then it got better.
Robert Andino lined a single into left field, with Carl Crawford failing to make a sliding catch. Reimold slid home safely, and Andino fired his helmet into the air and leaped around second base before being buried by teammates.
Unbelievable.
